I’ve seen you reference your paduak Wal a few times for having such a super aggressive tone. I wonder if such a difference is just from the top wood or if it’s just a fluke thing and that one happened to have extra bite. Did it have a satin finish? When I compared my Wals I found my MK3 to be much more aggressive but I attributed that to the poly finish.

Paul reckons than on average wenge and padauk have the brightest most punchy aggressive tone as very dense woods. However, he also says the tonal differences between two different pieces of the same species of wood can be quite marked.

Oh okay. So it had definitely had some wear and tear on it when you got it to say the least haha. Got any pictures of this bad boy? Don’t think I recall seeing this one. Or I just don’t remember amongst all the Wal photos that get posted in this thread haha

A couple pages back I posted a dim video of me playing it in the studio. the original finish was badly damaged, and the remaining was sanded off.

I sold it a couple years ago. but this is what it looked like.

I found the poly finish to give a more focused and compressed sound. I wouldn’t say it accentuated the high end in my opinion. The satin finish sounded more open and a little less punchy. Just my opinion of course. I’m also just comparing two Wals. I’m sure others on here that own many Wals could give you a better comparison of how the poly affects the tone.
