I guess in a very generic way, Alembic Series basses are the closest bass out there to the Wal basses. I am not saying in sound necessarily but more in a functionality type way. There aren’t a ton of Series basses for sale at any given moment but a used one can be bought off of Reverb/eBay at any given moment plus some better deals can be found on forums.

This just isn’t the case with Wals. Why do you think it is like that? Less Wals available overall, more private person to person sales occurring in groups like this or is it that Wals basically disappear when they are listed because they are more sought after, or... I understand being in the US is a factor too.

After playing Dingwalls for 7 or 8 years I am back out in the market looking for the next sound in my head. I have an Alembic Series 1 on the way and I hope it isn’t too clinical/hifi. I want a Wal very badly too. I am certain that it will be my live bass because I love their sound in every different situation that I have heard them in. If anyone is considering letting one of their Wals go, let me know please. I am open to 4 or 5 string, fretted or lined fretless. The bass definitely doesn’t need to be in collector condition.

So, I set it up to factory for a starting point. So my question is:
Anyone else's PUs this recessed to get 6mm clearance from pole to bottom of string? I see all the 4str PUs have poles set north of the cover; but I don't see how that's possible on 5/6str to maintain adequate space!

I like my Wal tone as grindy as can be. I have the poles sticking up just 'proud' of the cover, except the G poles are sticking up a hair more. And I have my pickup height set closer to the strings: like 5-4 mm away as long as I dont hit the poles when slapping.

Awe dude, you know me, all about the grind! Otherwise, what's the point.
I want mine like yours essentially— but with your covers and pole pieces you've got to be <6mm. But if I'm following factory "standard" for reference, there's no way I can get 6mm between pole piece and bottom string (fretted 21st). I don't want my poles to be recessed and I need more cover to play off of.
I need to step back and regroup I reckon. Got a minute, send me a straight on pic? Need another reference to get outta my head

I dont press the string down on my measurement, its just static. You can see its 4mm between the B string and top of the pickup.
2nd pic shows at least how I like the poles under the G to be for bite.

I use Mesas which can handle the high output of Wals and my goofy setup without me having to turn the internal trims down on the Wal preamp. i might have the low trims back a hair, but only on a couple of them not all.

Excellent. Good thinking on the static approach. Had to walk away for a bit. My low trims are at zero for the neck and midway for the bridge, may experiment w/ them as well. Pics are much appreciated. Get me back on my feet! Many thanks. Most appreciated.

Plenty of Wals for sale as long as you are willing to pay the high price....

@BWorm That is the only song that he didn't play a Wal on. I went back and watched some of my footage from last night and it pretty good except for one guy's fist coming into the shot a few times. I was probably 30 rows back, slightly stage left towards Danny and Justin. I might put one video on youtube.

@Les Fret I am refereing to used Wals. As of now, there isn't one here in the classifieds, there is a lefty fretless and single pickup Wal Pro on Reverb and eBay - so I am not seeing plenty. I have looked on BassChat and most of those folks aren't willing to ship to the US. The FB group doesn't look to have any available currently either. All of which is fine, I can wait and I am having a conversation with a private seller too.

I was also taking about used Wals. If you are a bit patient you will see plenty come by. Maybe more in Europe and not as many as Alembics. But I think there are much more Alembics made than Wals for example. Problem is that people are asking too much for them lately (last few years). Can't blame them as long as people are willing to pay that price.
