I was going to say black as well, but forgot to add that. I thought way back i had read an interview with Flea and he had mentioned it and the song. But can't remember which one. There may have been a mention of some heavy effects on it as well.

Hmmm I don’t know. I swear I remember seeing it last time I watched it. Maybe sir psycho sexy?
I knew he had the red Mk1. But I learned that he also had a red Mk2 at the same time. And I found a studio video, and brief snippets of both basses can be seen while recording of Unquestionable Truth. You can hear the boingy Wal attack on some of those tracks.

As far as I know the 4-string tracks were all on the Wal, and the 5-string tracks (Funky Monks, Righteous & The Wicked) were on the Musicman 5 String.
Someone mentioned the track Sir Psycho Sexy: that should also be on the Wal. In the documentary the head of the bass is covered by a music stand in one shot, not headless. It’s in low light though, so I can see why it looked different. Clip:

Some songs are just the front pickup (if you have to ask) others are both, etc. some songs have one amp higher in the mix, others have more DI or more of the grungier amp turned up (a guitar amp or a B15 cranked from what it sounds like). It may not always sound like it’s the Wal, but it almost certainly is.

Right on the money here. You can do a lot with a single bass. Especially a Wal!

from my understanding back before - the Wal preamp is gone and there is an aftermarket preamp connected to the Wal pickups. sad life of that Wal.
I’m really digging JC’s tone in Tool these days but 7K + for a bass to start is crazy. Talk about diminishing returns. To some, that final 3% might be worth the extra 4K.
I did get a chance a few years ago to play a fretless and a fretted Wal. I bought a Warwick Thumb of the guy; he had 4 Wals in his rehearsal space amongst many other nice basses. They are pretty cool instruments.

I was trying to think of one in Tangerine then I remembered a book I own. Once my les Paul sells I should have enough money to be ready for a pro bass when another one comes up. Really want one in black.
Just for clarity, that one’s not a Pro IIE, it’s one of the JG Series that predated the Pro Bass. IIRC that one was one of the first and belonged to John Gustafson (of Roxy Music and the Ian Gillan Band). Most were passive only (although there were a few active ones towards the end as Wal put together their Pro Series circuitry).
