I've just replaced the capacitors, and it seems like the surgery has gone well. It still sounds like a Wal
A bit strange: the treble EQ pot is now working less smooth, and it's also harder to pull it up. I have no idea why tbh.
I guess I don't need to emphasize how I felt a bit uneasy while soldering this exquisite instrument.
Of course replacing capacitors has nothing to do with the spinning function of tone knobs.... so it must be in the reassembly.
Did you happen to lube the pots with anything?
When you reinstalled the knob did you leave a tiny space gap, or is it now dragging against the body surface?
Did you overtighten things?
It's crude, however, what I do is put a super thin pick on each side whenever I'm re-installing any knobs. That gives me even clearance all around.
I use a business card with notch cut out.
To lube the pots, I like to use a toothpick dipped in Deoxit and the dribble it down the shaft, as well as a squirt in the backside of the pot openings.

I may have overtightened the nuts that keep the pots in place. I will check on that, but my impression was that the pot was very hard to turn without the knob already, when the circuit board was not even installed into the bass. I tried to turn both EQs and the balance knob to center detent, and that one pot was very hard to twist. I have deoxit and will try applying some. Thanks for all the recommendations people.
Does anyone know what purpose those caps have? Not electronically, I know what a capacitor is for. In a Fender P the capacitor has some influence on the upper register of the tone and the way the tone pot works.
ok nice footage! I never found his Wal tone very distinct though. Could be any bass and I wouldn't recognize it blindfolded. I Prefer his Rickenbacker and Hofner for his style of playing.
Any tracks of him that feature a distinct Wal tone? Maybe I have missed it.
I think he used the Wal on "Free as a Bird". I think the song has a low "D", so the Wal was used. I could be wrong, of course!

Don't know if I can find the video quickly but there's one about the making of those songs and specifically mentions the producer not being that happy about Paul using a bloody 5-string on a Beatles song. But he also used Bill Black's upright on Real Love so maybe it all evens out...
Just checked out that song. I didn't recognize anything that sounded like a Wal bass.
It's there but it could have been any bass.
It was the nuts. I loosened them a bit, and everything works fine now. The nuts are basically only finger tight now, no tools used. As soon as I tighten them more, the pots will turn harder.
Then mission accomplished!
The Wal can mimmic the many, but none can mimmic the Wal.
That's also of way of looking at it.
no not really, but Q3A was the defining game of my life so far. Played Quakeworld, then a lot Quake 2 Rocket Arena, and then Q3A in Leagues. I loved that game so much. I've tried Quake Champions, and its kinda spot on!

little not Wal related story: one of my former clan mates married, and as part of the bachelor party we organized a classic LAN party with eight people and played Q3DM6 all evening long and it was a blast. We had so much fun... after a few games all the old reflexes kicked in and we were shouting respawn times like mad
so good.
This dude is a dear friend of mine for many years, and we only met him because of Quake II. He used to live in a different part of Germany (6h drive away, which is a lot over here), but he moved over here for college.
I was best man for another friend I met through WoW. In fact, most of my dear friendships originate in either PC gaming or pen&paper RPG.
Back on Wal track, I have the impression that my Wal sounds even better after the repair job.
Is there a way to order the little screws for the electronics cavity plate? I guess I could ask Paul, but aren't those screws rather standard little - perhaps british - screws? I only have three left, and they are in a bad shape.

You can buy the screws from Paul. He even sells them on ebay.uk. You'll need a full set, the new screws are a tad longer and have deeper hex slots so they're easier to use than the old ones.
