The masking tape info in the cavity’s I’d heard are not always correct.

Just posted the cavity cover of said bass and it's listed as African padauk with English maple fingerboard.

I would love a maple-board Wal. What is the reason for all the maple oppression? Maybe the maples should form a union and demand equal rights...

The maples should form a union, perhaps they'll pass a noble law, where the fingerboards will all be kept equal
by hatchet, axe, and saw.

It’s interesting that there is nothing permanent to ID a Wal mk3 ? Or is their ID in the neck pocket & on the neck that you can't see?
My maple fretboard Mk2 has a Mk3 neck joint so doesn’t have the neck plate with a serial number stamp.

Just go by body shape. If it's a mk2 with a mk3 neck joint, it's still ordered as an mk2. @TonyT needs to fix some of his database entries it seems since viewing some of his entries its not entirely correct.

Likewise, some people also ordered an mk3 with a mk1/mk2 headstock, but its still an Mk3.

Exactly......although currently, that certain point excludes maple fingerboards

I got denied when I asked it for my upcoming retro-Pro build.

I know it’s a shame. I knew Pete well so when I ordered that bass nothing was ever said about the maple fretboard, it was just another order. If I remember right he was more interested in the Mk3 neck joint being ordered on a Mk2

Maple Wal

Have you ever compared your maple fingerboard Wal with a rosewood or ebony board Wal soundwise?

I have 2 other Wal’s both 5 string Mk3’s with ebony boards, one fretless. The maple Mk2 with new strings definitely has more zing/bite than the 5 strings. I hate saying it but Entwistle vibes springs to mind.
I’m not one for new strings but yes there is a slight difference.
I think though Mk2’s sound & feel different to a Mk3 anyhow maybe it’s that?
But to be totally honest I always sound the same on any bass lol

Those body facings look a lot like the tulipwood on Mick Karn's Wal, but I thought he had the only one with tulipwood.

Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I thought I'd read somewhere that even Mick's tulipwood top wasn't really tulipwood.
Does that ring a bell for anyone else, or am I crazy?

I wonder if it makes much sound difference. Maybe sounds more bright?

Sonically no different than ebony. Extremely tight grains on both = same tight-brightness.

While we have seen a few incorrect tapes, its very rare. I'd estimate 98/99% of the tapes are correct.

The Mk3 serial is going to be the final build date and only located in the control cavity. So if you ordered a Mk3 neck joint on a Mk2 bass, then you will also have a 'date' style serial.
