I don't have any good recording equipment so it would be off an iPhone... I sent this to my cousin today so he can get an idea, but the audio quality is utterly crap (seriously crap).. but you get the idea..

To my ear in that video (with all the knobs pushed in btw), they sound absolutely dead due to the crappy audio quality of the iPhone.

ok, this was a crap representation of the tone of this thing.. so I went out and got a cheapie recording analogue to digital unit and opened up garage band for the first time in my life and made this quick tonal clip of just some random bass thing using pentatonic scales.. Sounds the best with headphones or good high fidelity speakers.

Hey everyone I could use a little bit of help.

I went to change out the necks on my fretless 4 string Mk1 and it looks like the replacement neck uses the single 4 string retainer system where is the old neck uses the two individual two string retainers.
Here are pictures of:

As you can see, the 2x2 retainers for the unlined neck are not the right ones. This is what I need:

I measured and it looks like the holes from center to center on the replacement neck span between 1 and 5/8 and one and 3/4 inches. Which means I can’t simply buy a hip shot to replace it because they span 1 3/4.

Does anyone know what aftermarket string tree wall was using? Or were they making their own and how can I get one?

I’d get Wal to supply one. It almost looks like the unlined neck should have the current one-piece retainer based on screw locations.

Yes, that is what it looks like but it is a neck made in 1990. Was that the standard unit at that point in time?

Its not aftermarket, its their own tree. You'll have to order one direct.

Yes the large single tree came out by 1989

long time Wal players .. So I'm playing around with the Knobs on the new bass... I'm finding a couple of things... and I want to see if maybe I'm missing something in how best to set up the Filter/Knobs..

First off, the tone with pic attack off is just too subdued.. almost muffled.. and yet, with it open/on it's almost super bright.. I'd like to get something in the middle so I'm messing with the two pick up tones... and what I"ve found is that having the treble pickup set on 10, and the bass/bridge pickup set to 5 I get the "best" slap tone.. to get both low end punch, and high end pop.. Slap players, Is there a better way to set up for a slap tone? or have I found it?

I’ve been gigging with a MK1 for about 8 months, so this is purely my experience so far:
-Setting the internal trim pots is super important. I dial back the bass level for both pickups just a bit. This allows me to use the filters a little more “deeply”.
-ditto for pick attack trim pot. I have it so it adds just enough “zing” for Marcus/StingRay/Alembic moments. With the pick attack down it’s a lot more vintage in the top end, a punchy.
-I’ve enjoyed having the pickup pan centred and using the filters to blend the pickups. I’ll keep one pickup filter more open (6-8) and the other pickup filter lower (2-5) almost to just add lows.
-Setting up Wal controls is very different to normal actives I’ve used. Almost a whole new learning curve.
Anyway, that’s just me so far. And technique plays a massive part in sound.
Most gigs is B/T centre, B filter down/8, T filter down/4, pick attack as needed.

very insightful... and I totally spaced out on the trim pots, thanks for bringing that up.. I guess I have to take that back plate off and mess around with it... The way it's setup now, It's a bit too zingy and "Alembic" sounding .... except with the pick attack off, where it's totally subdued and almost as if the entire treble region has been shaved off..

I took the volume output down, too. These basses are hot.

You can adjust the pick attack trim pot inside the cavity. I have it set to about 25% or so. 100% is much too harsh and bright for me.

As for the filter knobs: I mostly play without them pulled up. For slap try: Neck: 10, bridge: 5. Blend in the middle (or to taste). Pick attack with 25%. Or without pick attack.

Don’t be afraid to set the filter knobs high, even fully open. Everything below 5 sounds pretty muffled.
