That bass had been for sale for a couple of years. Someone paid top rate for a roached out bass too.

well maybe the value was in it's alleged prior owner? I'm not a huge fan, but if someone was selling one played by someone I admire., I might overlook the issues.
i posted about some info on this bass back in FB a few times but don't think i've ever posted anything here.....
back in 2018 i was in talk with a previous owner of this bass that was thinking of selling a pair of Wals he owned - i was infatuated with this black one because of the "fluer de lyes" inlays. he was straight forward about the bass and provide me all the info he knew....he bought the bass directly from the bassist of Banshee back in 95/96 and it looked like this.....
he had a friend in the furniture business and had him strip the paint off and respray in an attempt for restoration
this is where it was at while i when i was talking to him - i had wanted him to bring it to Paul for a restoration work..
it had a had a few knicks and dongs from the guy owning 20+ years
he brought it to Wal and when Paul got around to checking out the bass, this was the feedback i got from him:
"Hi Jose Thanks for your patience Well the neck does actually straighten out although the truss rod is fairly tight but does have heavier strings on it so it is workable The body crack is loose and can be glued – the main problem here is the overall shaping from sanding before the previous refinish – if refinishing again we would have to remove more to regain its original shaping and there would be some compromise. There would be a chance if being a solid colour like black but I just don’t think we’d be able to remove enough to make it work as a transparent finish I’m happy to make this bass function but as far as refinishing the body - it’s not the type of work we really have time to get in to – for me the result would be compromised. It’s an instrument that has been well used and that gives it great charm – if you can get it for a good price it may be better having it refinished locally Happy to discuss further Best wishes"
I ended up passing on the bass based on Paul's assessment. it seemed like a cool bass with alot a character, but it had a bit too much mojo for my liking at the time..
Since then it seems an owner after him had it resprayed a bit from the looks of all the current sale photos. hopefully it found a good home.....or maybe we'll see it marked up a few more grand in a couple weeks from the regular suspects.....but at the current price it sold at and its current condition i'm a bit amazed.....

I didn't see anything in the listing about it being a refin. I suppose it's possible that the seller didn't know about it, but I think I'd be pretty peeved to find out after I'd boughten it.

maybe it's my "next level" OCD but my re-finish detector was pegged at 10 out of 10 with those photos.... you'd have to be very naive for it not to at least reach 5 out of 10 and ask the seller before buying..
It's a Wal... would have been better to leave it bare and put a clear finish on it. But it really comes down to how it sounds... if electronics are good and it still sounds like a Wal, then there's much of the reason one buys a Wal anyway. I'm glad this abused instrument found a home!

Yes, I ordered with Dunlop strap locks. The MIDI has the original Wal strap buttons.
Those are not original buttons on the midi, those are Schaller strap lock buttons in your picture
Thanks for the correction. In any case it simply doesn't bother me because I almost never have the Wals side by side like in the photos. Furthermore I have never used the MIDI with a strap, I've always played it sitting down.
I don't know if this has been shared in here before... maybe someone missed it anyway... worth a re-share..
