I think this sentence sums up what I'm thinking, the idea that at this price, in this condition, the money may be better utilized either sidelined for another that comes along, or readied for if/when Paul's queue opens up again for new builds. A lower price could change that opinion, such as offering 2-3k less to play as-is and repair if the issues worsen into functional issues, and if he takes it that means you were meant to have it.
Another thing to consider, and I hate to bring up re-sale in the purchase decision, but the issues you are having in the purchase decision may be in the mind of the next buyer should you decide to sell it one day. But I think the answer to "can I enjoy this is-as?" is the same answer as whether to buy it or not.
That seller's a notorious flipper. I imagine he thinks the price it's listed at accounts for the condition of the neck. Otherwise it'd be $12k.

Ya gotta be careful out there.... Verbal and audio presentation by seller that it is "merely the poly" was factually untrue. As-is does not work for me at anything other than a ridiculously low price. A refinish or new neck by Wal and Wal only is the only way forward. I am almost breathless waiting for their reply. And how that info is used to negotiate... and then the seller has to be open to reality. Two years is a a long time on the market...

Hard question. It’s worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I personally would not pay more than 6k for a Wal or any other bass for that matter. But in good condition a used Mk1 could do 8k, anything beyond that is just insane....
I would pass on this one. Or pay 5 or 6k max and have it repaired. Another one will pop up eventually.

Interesting quest for the Wal tone. There is something in the Wal mid range that’s hard to imitate. But you are coming close. Cool that you used my bass line in the comparison! Good luck with the quest. Greetings, Barend Tromp
Ha, we had a discussion on this a couple of years ago in this thread I think. My son is a leftie but I suggested when he took up guitar as a kid he learn rightie so he could pick up anything and play it. He did that and only plays rightie, he's a pretty good jazz guitarist now!
Saw that. I'd need to see some solid provenance on some of the claims made on this one used to justify the price, for example it was used for recording Blood Sugar Sex Magic and over 49 other albums, with only evidence given is you may see a black Wal in some Chili Peppers music videos. I think I'm gonna need a signed letter from Flea or the album's producer for that kind of premium on an old Mk1.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik was done on a Mk2, and it was blue with a natural neck. And Flea still owns it.

Wow nice call. The documentary is up on YouTube. Can't see the color (it's B&W video), but (starting at 23:50) the body style looks Mk2 and the paddle is natural and not black like the Reverb one. Doh!
RHCP was one of my top faves back in the day, and that was one album that sent me looking for what makes that sound!
Yeah the movie is a bit dark. The manager from The Bass Centre in Hollywood sold Flea the Mk2. Its the blue one pictured on the middle. Flashes and bright lighting make it look brighter than it is, there was an interview video and Flea once showed it off at his house probably 10 yrs ago and it looks more darker denum blue in regular light.
