Warmoth Bass Porn...Show yours too

Mongo2 - I've seen that one before and it's still my favorite fretless of all time. That picture alone should eliminate all debate about wood does not matter. I don't care how it sounds, that's some of the finest wood on a bass that I've ever seen at any price. Clearly "Museum Quality" in the looks department and I bet it plays quite nicely as well. Some mighty fine timber there man!

Poor pic, but a joy to play!
Quite a basic bass, actually ordered the neck as a 24 "fret", but trimmed it to 22.
Barts are nice and woody on this alder body, almost could use a little more bite in the tone, but it's good.

Wow! Darkstars on a Jazz with the '62 control pot layout - well done sir! That a bass I've love to try out, can't imagine what it sounds like. Post a sound clip or youtube link if you ever get a chance.

I have since changed the '62 layout to a the VVT setup, as it favours more mids coming through the signal. i AB'd the two by recording them, and im keeping the VVT. Anywho, i do have videos of this bass and my warmoth/fender fretless here: joerobot32's Channel - YouTube

i'm almost finished with the short scale warmoth J bass. i recontoured the body with a deeper arm relief and tummy cut before i shot it with mary kay trans white nitro. i also reshaped their 'warhead' headstock into a standard fender shape. funny thing is, they only put one side dot at the 12th fret, so i filled it and installed two. here's a pic right before i added the string retainer:

it's a great playing and sounding (little) jazz bass.

I remember Jimmy Bain pictured with an old slab body Precision inside the gatefold cover of Rainbow On Stage. Hard to see here but he had an extra single coil down by the bridge.

Flamed Koa/Mahogany + Flamed Teak/Ebony Active J:

That's the best use I've ever seen for a clear pickguard. The flame on that Koa is outstanding, glad you didn't cover it up. Both beautiful basses!

Beautiful "sleeper" bass. At a distance it looks pure Fender with the tobacco burst and pickguard but then when you look a little closer that lacewood top just pops out at you as do the neck woods. Great execution of taking the Fender art to the next level!

JohnK - very classy build, love the body finish. The deeper arm relief and tummy cut came out very nice, I've seen those botched before on home jobs so I never had the courage to try it. Did you do the Mary Kay finish yourself? Again, looks top notch and as I'm getting older I'm really starting to dig the short scale basses even more (just ergonomically friendly).

''Sleeper bass''... Interesting description, but actually very precise on what I wanted with this bass: Something not to crazy, something a bit understated, but still with a lot of ''pop'' when you check it out...

I like the wide finger spacing at the bridge, the P + MM pickups and the fact that the P pickups are reversed. It's probably a very, very cool bass.

A recent bass I built with body and neck from Warmoth, custom preamp from John East, pickups from Bartolini, tuners and bridge from Hipshot, Strings from Optima, straplocks from Schaller, pickguard from Chandler, strap from Levy and paint from a guitar paint shop in Kentucky.

Had a lot of fun building it and even more fun playing it. This is my go to bass and takes the place of my Alembic Essence, 1968 Fender P bass and my 1978 Stingray. I can get just about any sound I want from this preamp and pickup configuration and the Optima strings are as good as gold. If you've ever contemplated building a Warmoth bass don't hold back, tons of fun, lots of learning's and very rewarding, not cheap but then again its replacing about $8000 in basses for me.

BTW I went with a vintage white color that's not quite cream but not quite white either. I didn't want it to look to stark, cold or formal with all the gold hardware so I softened it up a bit with a vanillia type color. Here's a shot next to something white for reference.

Nice concept. I had a vintage white build at one time, great color. I assume the bridge is top load, not string through? 18 mm ?
