Warmoth Order Disappointment- RESOLUTION UPDATE IN OP

Status
Not open for further replies.
If you paid for a 4-5A Flame Option, that's not it. I'd ask them for a replacement to ordered spec. If they refuse this, they should refund you the cost of the unique choice option.

After years of agonizing over this kind of thing as well, I've learned to love things for what they are instead of what they aren't. The POSITIVES here are 2:

1: That is a BEAUTIFUL neck
2: Flame necks are less stable, so you probably actually ended up with a better neck in the long run

I think he said, 'almost' and I feel that frustration...with shipping he is still looking at $180 min. That's close to enough to 'almost' $200 for a 'restocking' fee for a company made mistake. That's a big hit under the circumstance IMO.
If they agree it is their fault, I'd talk to a manager about that restocking fee. If the manager won't fix it, I'd open a dispute with my credit card company. Why the hell should he pay a restocking fee if they agree it is their fault?

If i couldn’t negotiate a deep deep discount, I’d take advantage of the return policy, pay the restocking fee if that’s what it took to get it gone, then find someone else to build my neck. I’ve had more than one MIM J neck with more (and nicer) flame figure in them.

Not reading all 10 pages of this, so sorry if this has already been said...
Maybe cite the poor example of flamed maple that this is, and ask for a partial refund for the difference between a plain maple neck and the flamed one? - At any rate, not offering you anything more than a look at their customer service policy has already hurt them more than the amount they saved by sticking to their guns. - I mean, exposing their brand of customer service to 10 pages of TB folk? Seriously? We are their prime market! I guess I can see that setting a precedent for caving to the "not as pictured" issue, but man... In my opinion, the wood that neck was made from should have been relegated to the plain maple neck pile. To me it's more of a highly figured plain neck. Which I would have been pretty happy to get if I ordered a plain maple neck. As-is, it's a poor example of a plain neck and has cost them more than your refund by a bunch. I'm just one person who was considering building a Warmoth 5 this fall. Now I'm having concerns about not getting a good version of what I would be ordering, and then having policy emailed to me if I have a problem with that.

Wow this certainly blew up since my post on page 2. Warmoth didn't charge me a restocking fee and they made it right for me...kudos. But they absolutely refused to email me any photos of spalted maple for tops that I with credit card in hand, going to order a body. I understood that they are too big of a company to personalize for me, but I cannot commit to that dollar amount without seeing what I would get in a spalted maple top. USACG emailed me multiple photos of their inventory of spalts and I went with them. But I still buy from them though...

It’s been said before — nevertheless, I’ll chime in: That’s a maple neck with some flame, not a flamed-maple neck. A happy bonus on a standard neck, but a great disappointment on an upgraded build. Warmouth should make good on this; I expect they will. Kudos for being level-headed in a time when rage is often the first response.

You did not get what you paid for and I'd be way beyond disappointed. I'd be angry.

Let them know there are hundreds of bass players aware of this transaction who do not approve.

I was just on their page the other day. I'm looking elsewhere for my next custom neck now.

So I tend to agree with all of the opinions here. I very nicely contacted customer service by phone, and they asked to see pictures. I sent them photos, along with the comparison photos I showed here. Their CSR’s initial response:

“We cannot guarantee the flame figuring in any of our products. Wood grain varies piece by piece. We will have multiple eyes look at this to see if we are at any fault here. If we decide we’re at fault, we’ll rebuild your neck with a 20% restock fee for the first one. But if our builders say it looks fine, you’re welcome to reorder a neck to your liking for the cost of the new neck, plus the restock fee for the first neck.”

Oof.
There went any chance/faith in my consideration of doing a Warmoth build. Aside from the underwhelming grain, it looks like a nice neck but, I’m with you and why you’re disappointed. After reading their CSR response and not even a remote bit of acknowledgment that it is sub-par nor, validating your disappointment there’s no way I’m going take a chance with a few hundred dollars or more.

I will weigh in on the spirit of your OP and agree that you did not get what you paid for. That is unfortunate, and the initial response from customer service is equally unfortunate.
I see that you paid $155 additional for the “flame/roasted” option. How much is the “flame” by itself? Personally, since everything else seems to meet your specs and satisfaction, what if they were to credit you the cost of the “flame” option? I think that would give me a minor level of satisfaction and allow me to keep what you got.

Warmoth has always been a “nickel and dime you” company that advertises as a “custom shop” but really is not. Tommy left Warmoth and started USACG over 20 years ago because he had issues with how Warmoth ownership ran the company. Too bad USACG is no-more.
That said, I have owned many Warmoth parts.
Strictly in terms of quality, everything always seemed well made. I don’t like their necks, but that is an issue with my personal preference. I have had multiple purchases where I paid an up charge for light weight bodies only to get 5.5 lb P-bass body in alder. Because it was more than once, that makes me a sucker. Because they had no interest in addressing my dissatisfaction, that makes them have poor customer service policies.
I would still feel comfortable purchasing a body off of their showcase (in stock), but I would never order anything “custom” from them.

So far, this is terrible customer service. For what you paid I think I’d be less polite and let them know the next step is you’ll hear from my wife.

if you paid extra for flame then that's terrible. My plain stock Fender Precision has as much flame as that.
