I agree that they are quite close in size. IIRC Warmoth used to have this diagram on their site that showed the subtle differences in the body shapes.
I like the Dinky J body shape, especially the slimmer horns.
Considering the relatively minor differences, I don’t think you can expect the average Dinky J body to be dramatically lighter than the average J body @Ohabanero . If weight is a concern then you’ll want to shop carefully. Maybe wait for the right body to appear in the showcase rather than ordering a new build.
The Dinky J that I put together is paired with Warmoth’s 2+2 tiltback neck. I love this bass
Hot Rats is one of his best. My favorite is One Size and I never had the opportunity to see Frank live but I was fortunate to see Dweezil do the entire One Size Fits All album in a small venue here in Pa. Absolutely the most impressive live show I’ve ever witnessed. Thanks to everyone for your photos I’m definitely gonna get a Dinky J body. I like the look of the horns better as well.My pleasure. Wow!! That was a beauty!! 1988.. I didn't realize Warmoth had been around that long.. Back then the only outside influence I had being in the upper mid-west was a Music Emporium (Now Musicians Friend) catalog or a rare offering of a Carvin catalog
Thanks. I saw an ad in Guitar Player and had to send away for a catalog. That was probably '86 or so. It was in black and white. Then called and placed the order. I used to drool a lot over those Carvin catalogs. I cannot recall exactly, but I think Boogie Bodies from the 70's became Warmoth. Someone will set me straight if that isn't accurate.
I've been trying to see Dweezil for years and it always never works out. I've seen vids of course but want to see a show.
My main player for many years was a Warmoth J. I'm sure I knew what I was buying at the time, but it wasn't until many years later that I looked at the order and saw it was a dinky J. It never seemed dinky while I was playing it.

The one that displaced the J must be a winner. Is it also a Warmoth build?
I semi-retired that bass due to due to weight (10.5# on a post office scale), and increasing issues with my back and knees. Main player duties shifted when I got my [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. I also ordered an Adamovic Soul, but when playing out it's still the Maruszczyk (8#) about 70% of the time, Adamovic (7.5#) about 25% of the time, and the Warmoth 5%. I currently have a bass being built for me by Ruokangas -- I don't know how much that one is going to weigh yet, but they know weight is a priority for me.
About 6 years ago, I decided I was at a point in my life where I could afford to splurge on a nice bass every couple of years or so. That's about when I discovered Maruszczyk here on TalkBass. I'd never played a Maruszczyk, nor held one, nor ever even seen one in person. But once I heard about them, I learned everything I could, and then trusted my intuition. (My intuition has a really high hit rate. Incidentally, I trusted my intuition with the Warmoth build, too.) I did the same thing with Adamovic, and again that turned out really well for me. The Ruokangas bass requires an even higher level of trust, as it's going to be my signature instrument -- as in, my initials are going to be the 12th fret marker -- and it's significantly more expensive than the others. I expect to have a NBD post around August.

Honestly debating doing this but a P bass version (Warmoth doesn’t rout for a 3/2 precision pickup).
Have you asked them? That seems like the sort of thing that's not programmed into their CNC, but they could probably do manually for an upcharge of $40 or $45 or so.
I had this put together for a moment. EMG makes a 3/2 with a longer bar magnet in one pickup that fits a standard Precision size. I still had to move the D, G pickup a little though by routing out 1/4" more in the cavity. Bill Lawrence is another option but I, personally, don't like the A string being sensed by two magnets while the other strings are not. Ultimately, I don't think I gave it enough time to listen to it enough.

That is so sweet looking. That carved top Dinky P is cool as all get out. I was always planning on a carved top build but then one day, they were just gone.....
