Was there any good punk rock?

early suicidal tendencies and bad brains for sure, who morphed into hardcore at some point....The Ramones were ok, but more pop imo. Those two particular bands have a special place in my heart..I love BB for their reggae flare and ST helped pull thru some sht way back then.

Like it or not punk was an important evolution of rock music in the 70s. It was a return to the roots, just louder and dirtier.

In broad terms punk was that generation’s reaction to bands like Pink Floyd and Yes. It was a response to highly produced and complex compositions and took it back to a few chords and raw emotion. Punk influenced a lot of other music that came after it. (Like grunge and the pop-punk of the 90s and 2000’s)

So yes, punk has value. It may not be your cup of tea, but it is an important branch of the rock family tree.

I get where people take the Who as pre-punk, but really they were a Mod band.
The Who was one of the bands at the forefront of the mod movement. Their original slogan of maximum R&B and their original logo were hallmarks of the mod culture. Their music fused garage rock, classic R&B and modern rock music of the time and set a template for mod bands in the future. Later to be revived and led by bands like The Jam. There is really a very interesting history behind the early movements. It's worth the time to study up on Mods, Rockers, Rude Boys, Teddys, and Punks. Very cool stuff.

It seems that Pink Floyd and Yes has endured. So maybe the punks were wrong.

The Sex Pistols album (Never Mind the Bollocks) is a classic and holds up decades later. I wish there were more of that quality, but unfortunately most of the bands that followed didn't have it.

I do appreciate the recommendations in threads like this one, there's always something you haven't heard before and sometimes you get lucky.

The Ramones have endured as well. They are such a part of the pop culture now they sell kids t-shirts at Target and the like. The only reason they are not touring like Roger Waters is because they are dead.

Bands like Foo Fighters and Green Day have more punk in their DNA than they do Floyd or Yes. But in the end it is all music.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Floyd, but sometimes I want a stripped down raw sound.
