Regardless of whether or not you like “punk”, that movement is a significant part of the story/evolution of popular music. Without punk the trajectory of popular music would have been notably different. So there’s your value.

I was listening to this vid of Willie Nelson on the tonight show playing Bloody Mary Morning with the Super Suckers and realized that would've never happened if not for punk's influence on popular music culture.

If you're going to collect a multinational, multigenerational following of thousands of bands and claim the majority were Nazis you'll have to provide something more than a weird drive-by comment. There certainly were some white nationalist bands (here, I'll even provide you two names: Skrewdriver, The Dentists) but claiming they represented the genre is about as substantive as claiming the Charlie Daniels Band represents the whole breadth and history of country music, or Ted Nugent represents all of rock, or Wagner all of classical music.

Not in top-40 because it tends to be self-filtering by popularity, and not in R&B for blatantly obvious reasons. But in other genres? On the whole way more frequently than in punk, where the politics lean to the left far more often than to the right.

I'd like to thank the OP. I've been meaning to go back and check more Dead Kennedys lyrics for a long time now. I also checked out some MDC, some of which I'd love to post here but fear the banhammer.




While I'm still not a fan of the music, I'm with the lyrical ideas 100 percent.
