Washington Redskins name

The way I see it, it's about the intent of the term and not simply the subject's feelings.

That is, the intent of terms like this one is to put down a class of people -- maybe not the intent today, but at the inception of the term's use, it was to objectify a nationality to a less-than status. Native Americans are not alone in this. History is rife with examples of pejorative names for Italians, Mexicans, Roma, Vietnamese, Polish, Chinese, Irish, Africans, Jews, Arabs and many, many others. (How many did you think of there?) These names come from hate. And whether the victim accepts the term or whether some think they are amusing or respectful is irrelevant.

What is especially heinous about the DC football team name is that it normalizes a hatred-inspired name. It's in the media, we teach children to say it, it's plastered on apparel. There is no place in respectful society for a name that comes from hate.

Yes, just my opinion. Yada, yada, yada.
