Double Bass Wasn't RED a GREAT Player?

Emusic is doing a great job in getting more Red tunes out.
I still have downloads left for this month.....

Today is Hampton Hawes' BD and the local jazz station is celebrating by playing a lot of his music, so that means a lot of Red bass playing.

Today, I am listening to a Hampton/Red tune and just marveling at this really fine bass solo mostly in the lower positions, thinking how good that bass solo sounds without probably getting up much farther than C on the G string. Seance, I believe, was the name of the tune. Another great tune with Red on bass I have never heard before.

Just another reminder how great his playing has always been.

By the way, I downloaded the Jim Hall/Red duo tracks a while ago from another thread, so they are on some thread here on TB and available.

Thanks for the post Janette...
As you know, no reminder of Red needed for me. He's a huge part of me.

There's a youtube video of Hamp, Ray Brown and Shelly Manne....and, maybe Bob Cooper is on that one....from Shelly's old Manne Hole.
Search youtube under Hamp's name.

Yeah Man...I've been digging this for the last little while.
These two play from a place that most of us can only dream about. It certainly isn't on this planet.
I don't like to tear things apart, but with Jim and Red, I must at least mention a couple rather subtle things.
On Jim' first chorus, he quotes a very old, rare standard tune called " JIM " ( never, ever, brings me pretty flowers. ) the words go......Maybe only Mr. Fuqua and myownself would notice this. Maybe not.
Jim's musical breathing is breathtaking to me.
Red's constant down slurs and glissandi almost make me want to......

okay i havn't read all 15 pgs of this thread, but has anyone mentioned the arco solo red takes on stardust from Ben Webster's live at the renaissance? its pure soul. its the kind of thing, one has dreams about. i got the album burned from a friend and always marveled at the bass playing and only recently found out who it was. i can't put into words how it makes me feel. it transcends story telling into something purely experiential. its the kind of thing i remember when i think about all the time i seemingly waste playing music.

Chris, this side has only recently been re released. I got it just before I moved, so it's in storage right now.
Thanks for the reminder. Can't wait to dig it out.
