Way huge Pork and Pickle

So, is the headroom issue inherently always there? Or, are the headroom issues only audible if trying to use this pedal as a clean boost? I was confused by the clean signal 100% comments....

Also - can anyone else directly compare the Pork & Pickle to one of these that I own and familiar with?? DOD Carcosa, Tech21 Bass Boost Fuzz, MXR El Grande.

The "clean" signal from the blend is not intended to be purely clean. I did notice some clipping with it, but I assumed in listening that it was intentional to make the clean signal blend more naturally with the dirt circuit. It didn't sound bad to me on its own either.

I'm going off Youtube demos only for the BBF and El Grande, but the BBF sounded closest to the Pickle side of the three, at least in terms of EQ response. The distortion from the Pickle is smoother than the BBF.

That makes sense about helping it blend better... that's one part of the MXR Bass Fuzz Deluxe that I never could bond with, I felt like my clean and dirty were always fighting over the front seat & they never mixed/melted/sounded like one happy signal.

Can someone confirm that the internal "mix" controls the loudness of each effect? I'm assuming it's intended to make the flip from overdrive to fuzz easier without volume drops/spikes. Or, am I wrong in that assumption?

Anyone else using/commenting on this pedal? I'm very interested, but this thread seems to have gone very cold....

The more I use mine the more I love it.
Four internal trim pots.
  1. FUZZ OUTPUT trimpot adjusts mix of fuzz signal

  2. CURVE trimpot fine-tunes corner frequencies of OD signal

  3. PRESENCE trimpot tweaks high end of OD signal

  4. OVERDRIVE OUTPUT trimpot adjusts mix of OD signal

Those are the words I'm confused about... "mix" sounds like clean/dirty blending, but I'm assuming they just mean 'loudness'

I don’t have this pedal yet but I’m thinking these knobs are the same function as the corresponding knob on the pork loin. The clean blend on the outside goes from 100% effect counter clockwise to clean blended clockwise. The internal knob can further adjust that and blend in less of the effect and more of the “clean” signal.

weird... I never would have guessed that.

so on a demo i saw someone said that full clockwise was 60/40 (clean/dirty) or maybe even 50/50 (clean/dirty). So, these pots can change value? I thought they were master volume controls so you could flip the toggle from drive to fuzz and not have crazy volume spikes...

They allow you to further mold the sound you want.

After (finally) testing the Pork Loin clean line for distortion (powered with 9V), I am puzzled how the same circuit can be marketed as bass fx. There is no "soft clip" in that sound, it is not even a fuzz, it just sounds horrible.

@kleinenenten :: It is standing open on my pedal "test-bed" for the past two weeks (a chest-level desk with isolated PSU and a set of common pedals like tuner, octaver, fuzz, reverb, chorus). Trust me, the internal knobs have been checked, moved, tested with extremes. I had the tweeter at ear level. Also took time to go over 10+ talkbass threads about Pork Loin, in order to find out what people say about each control and pick up ideas on how to find the desired sound.

I believe someone mentioned the test already but...
  • Take the drive's MIX knob and bring it down to 0. Only then you are left with just the clean line that is based on the Neve preamp.
  • Turn the clean level up, to the level you would usually do, or max it (for science).
  • Does it go into distortion, if so, is it pleasant?
  • Now plug the 18V line and see how it changes.
Would not want to derail this thread talking about the purple pedal but, since it is a part of Pork & Pickle, and sharing the same feature (problem in my case), I thought it is good to discuss it further.

The more I play with this pedal the more I love it. Recently I began using it as a "clean" preamp stage to warm my class D GK amp. Drive turned down to around 9 o'clock with the clean blend maxed then adjust the tone and clean tone knobs to suit the bass/rig/room combo. It adds a bit of lows and just a bit of growl. Others will disagree and your results will very, But when it comes to dirt my first and last stop is Way Huge.

I'm running it at 9v. When running it "clean" it will break up some if I hit hard. I assume this is the "clipping issue" guys complain about. I tend to run it after the compressor which mitigates such clipping and I only notice it when played through headphones at home. Through the rig I can't say I ever noticed it.

I have the Eminence APT80 shooting at my face. Hearing frequencies bassist is "not supposed to produce" could very well be the problem, not the 9 volts and clipping the clean channel.
Hehe, sorry, there are no intentions in this post.
PS: shooting a high power HF driver semi directly at your ears will detoriate your hearing.
