Way Huge Saffron Squeeze Compressor mkII

It seems that Way Huge is re-issuing this compressor pedal:

Anyone have experience with the original (that sells for outrageous prices used)? I'm currently using a MXR Super Comp and will soon be on the market for something a little less noisy and also more flexible. I've had my eye on the MX-87, but I've recently developed a fondness for Way Huge after adding a Swollen Pickle to my setup and curious about this puppy.

I haven't tried an original Saffron Squeeze, but as Mingus Addict points out, it is a Ross clone, and I have tested many of those, and my feelings about them tend to run between boredom and distaste. Yes there are some circuits based around the same OTA principle which I like much better, but they are exceptions and they are very far from "clones" of the same old Ross/Dynacomp design. I won't be reviewing the new Saffron Squeeze unless somebody sends me one for free. :)

Picked up the Saffron Squeeze & Blue Hippo on Saturday!

Before anything else, I should add I don't use comps as a way of "levelling" out my playing. I don't like it to be subtle. I like them to be an "effect", the Tony Levin way of compressors. Think Steam or Red Rain by Peter Gabriel. And the only other comp I've tried is the Boss CS-2.

It's definitely usable with bass. There seems to be a bit of low end loss when the compression is almost maxed, but my ears might be deceiving me. When it's less compressed, there seems to be little to no low end loss. It gets squishy, but not as squishy as I hoped. I was hoping for a very squishy compressed Motown-ish sound (plus the gold matches great with my SGFX Gold & Pearl Beta). It sounds really good with the Beta (better than the CS-2) can't really say how Motown-y because my longtime P with flats bass currently has rounds.

Currently A-B'ing it with my Boss CS-2. Very minimal noise when the gain knob is off, comparable noise to my CS-2 when the gain knob is at full. Sounds more polite than the CS-2. Won't be doing any recordings, the only thing I have to record with is my iPhone 5S and I think it would pick up the compression very well.

I definitely need to play around with it more. These are just my initial thoughts. I'll report back after more playing.
