Were you dead before you were born (or conceived)?

Sure, materially speaking, we existed before "ourselves" as individuals but I think that is exactly what "prior existence" refers to; the existence of our identity as entities in the universe. To simplify, if you were to build a Lego fort, the pieces to build it existed long before the fort itself but that doesn't mean the fort existed. Once built, it becomes it's own body, independent of all other material. We are the Lego fort :).

"Conservation of energy" theory - energy can never be created or destroyed but only transformed. Part of what we are is energy. Impulses, patterns of energy - something has to put that lego fort together from the pile of legos.

Plus, there are theories that we only perceive time as linear, and that everything that has ever happened or will ever happen is actually happening right now, all simultaneously. Our teeny brains and little bits of consciousness can only perceive things to our ability to do so. We are "cognitively closed" to the real universe so we dwell in a very linear and organized state.

Now pass us that bong, will ya :)

I'm of the opinion that conciousness - i.e., self, soul, ID, what have you - exists separately and independantly from the body.

Therefore, no, you aren't dead before you're alive; you're just chillin' elsewhere with other dudes who are also dead/unborn.

Where the consciousness comes from, however, and what it's state is prior to formation, is anyone's guess.

Atoms are composed mostly of space. There's more room between the Electrons, Protons, and Neutrons than the space that the particles themselves take up.

So like how come a brick wall feels so solid? It's mostly just space between stuff.

Whoa........

I like tacos........

Are you a trafalmadorian?

Yes, one exists before being born, but only as a parasite feeding off of the host (pregnant woman). Before conception one does not exist in soul, body, or spirit, because I said so, so there.

Positive and negative charges. Like two magnets repelling each other. Not a scientist, cant explain it any further. I AM just a Lego fort after all so what can you really expect from me...

When you die your soul departs your body and travels to Venus, otherwise known as paradise. When someone on Earth becomes pregnant, a soul from paradise is taken and put into the new embryo. Life continues on. Until..... one day it is discovered by a government that Venus is paradise, and orders are given that we shold all emigrate at the same time, so that we could all live endlessly in pleasure on the planet Venus.
However, a small handful of renegades will manage to go underground and evade the massive emigration squads and ruin everyone chance at eternal happiness.

meh..I'll just stick to transvestism

Think about this though - if the question is "were you dead before you were born", then it all comes down to how to define "you".
The matter that we're created from comes (in part) from matter of things that were in fact, once alive. So something that once might have had consciousness is now part of us. Therefore - were you alive before being born - yes in a way. We were also dead.

Or does this make no sense?? I'll have to just walk away from this post now and ponder it a bit. :)
