I've been on a huge Harvey Danger kick lately. Most people are only familiar with "Flagpole Sitta", but they have 3 albums of great material out. I've been on an extended New Orleans music kick, since I went to JazzFest in April. Between live Fest recordings from JazzFestLive.com, and albums from Louisiana Music Factory, I've got a lot of new discs! Some discoveries:
Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen - jazzy/funky, a dash of blues. I got a live in Australia album.
Big Sam's Funky Nation - funky horn band & wild guitar player. Big Sam plays trombone and is a good singer and great stage presence. They tore it up at the Fest but weren't recorded. I got 2 studio albums. See them live if you can!
Papa Grows Funk - a funk quintet, all great players. Lotta cool guitar from June Yamagishi. Bass & drums are bada$$ as well. John Gros, keys/vocals, most excellent. I really liked this band, got 3 studio and 1 live (in N.O.) albums.
PBS - that's Porter, Batiste and Stoltz. 3/4 of the Funky Meters, I already knew about the Meters, but this is different. A power trio with a N.O. twist. Got their Fest set, and a studio album. Saw them in a nightclub, George was using two 8x10 cabs! He's the definition of New Orleans groove.
Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk - Ivan (son of Aaron) on keys/vocals, his cousin Ian (son of Art) on guitar. Need I even say they are funky as all heck? Neville family, that's all ya need to know! Didn't see this band, but I ordered their set from the second weekend of the Fest. Man, I wish I could have stayed and caught that!
Also gotta mention Anders Osborne, not so funky, more of a blues/rock guy. Good singer and great guitar player & songwriter. Heard his studio stuff in the car driving around town. Saw him in a nightclub. In his band, instead of bass guitar he had a sousaphone player! That guy (name escapes me, but he was from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band) was incredible! Tone was not like bass guitar, but he played a lot of bass-guitar-like licks, filling the role beautifully. And that big ol' shiny horn was quite impressive.
Of course, I was already digging the Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Sonny Landreth and the Fats Domino tribute album before I went down there...

I'm going to do this in comparison to my old interests.

Rock music...Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, Deep Purple, Heaven and Hell, Dio, Iron Maiden, Guns n Roses, etc.
Jazz Music...I don't remember any...
Classical Music...None, really. Maybe Beethoven's 9th...
And now...
For rock music...basically, Rush. And some Beatles. Of course I also have appreciation for bands and soloists like Lynyrd Skynrd, Eric Clapton, Guns n Roses, Aerosmith, etc. But mostly I only listen to Rush lately.
For jazz...Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Victor Wooten solo, Marcus Miller, some Chick Corea, and starting to get into Stanley Clarke. That's mostly the fusion stuff. I also like big band music like Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, etc. etc. etc.
Classical Music - Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, all the greats really. Oh and of course the William Tell Overture
This list is rather messy, as I was kind've surfing through my library and adding to it. There's also the likes of Simon and Garfunkel that I listen to now and of course Boston that I still appreciate, but by observing this list anyone can see that my musical appreciation has shifted far from rock music and mostly to jazz, classical, and similar. My appreciation for Rush will never die though.

At this exact moment? New Kingdom, specifically "Paradise Don't Come Cheap" A criminally underexposed group IMO.
But in general?
These days I get fixated on one band or artist and listen to all of their albums in a day or two. I'm an 80's New Wave junkie... yesterday I was watching a bunch of Flock of Seagulls videos.
And I was jamming out to the Bad Brains while my kids shook their heads in disgust
I just brought out my vinyl copy of Black Dots a couple of days ago, and my 2 year old loved it
anyway, right now I'm into:
Bad Brains, The Clash, The Cure, Joy Division/New Order, Lou Reed/Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Coheed & Cambria, Paramore, G N R(still waiting for Chinese Democracy), Pretty Girls Make Graves, Nine Inch Nails, Primus, Coltrane, Sun Ra, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman, Chopin, Anakrid...Yeah, this list could go on probably forever...let just put it this way: I own over 5000 albums from various genres and subgenres and listen to just about any/all of them at any given time.
