I'm not a huge fan of Stephen King, and don't recall having seen any of the poor adaptations you guys are referring to. I never read Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, so I don't know how strong the movie is as an adaptation, but it stands very well on its own as a movie and is currently #2 on Invalid Link Removed.

I watched the Green Mile a few weeks ago and I can say that it follows the book almost exactly until the very end. Again, a fine movie by itself, and an almost-completely faithful adaptation of its source material.

Just in case my first post didn't encourage you enough :)

Both 'The Green Mile' and 'The Shawshank Redemption' are on my list of top ten favorite movies. I'm not a huge fan of King's writing, but he is a great storyteller, and both of these movies exhibit this quality of his as well as great acting, directing, screenwriting, cinematography, etc. Also, the adaptation of 'The Shining' is pretty good, although it's nowhere near as good as TGM or TSR. If you haven't seen either of these movies, you MUST. No questions; no if's, and's or but's.

edit: This is a thread about books, so I'll add what I've read/am going to be reading recently. I just finished Kurt Vonnegut's 'A Man Without A Country', which was both very insightfual and intellectual as well as quite comical and entertaining. Next, I'm planning on reading 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegs'. A lot of my friends rave about this book and Hunter S. Thompson's work. I've never gotten around to readingit, but now a friend of mine said she'd lend it to me, so I should be starting that soon.

While I'll grant that the Shining was a decent movie, it had little to do with the Stephen King book of the same name.

Yeah, the movie was strikingly different, especially towards the end. You should watch The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. I think they're two of the best movies to come out of Hollywood in the past decade or so.

Shawshank is one of my all time favorites. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins are excellent. Haven't read the book though.
