What bass should I get????

Hi, im looking to buy a new bass soon and i was wondering if anyone could help me out with choosing one? I want a bass within a reasonable price £0 - £200ish,i am at an intermediate level, it has to be good at playing live at large and small gigs, but also good at recording and nice to have a mess about with. i am not too bothered about how it looks over all as long as it has good quality sound. Any ideas? I was thinking about a Epiphone Thunderbird IV???! :bassist:

My $0.02 would be to go to ALL of your nearby music shops and try AS MANY basses as you can and choose what feels right to you, regardless of whose tone it sounds like, let alone the name on the headstock!

If you can't/don't want to do that, go with a safe option. Ibanez SR or a Squier Jazz are, whilst belonging to trusted brands, versatile and are more likely to have the tone you want than putting all your eggs in one basket. Up to you though.

Edit: this is my own reply to another begginner who wasn't sure what he wanted :)
