The Dick Dale used 60 gauge strings. This from the Terry Gross interview...

GROSS: Did the sound of the ocean make you want to get that loud, amplified sound that you wanted?

DALE: Yeah, it was - it's a combination of the ocean and the roar of my tigers and lions, and just putting it all together, that force. And the ocean just has the two sounds. It has the one that comes over the top of your head - it's a lazy sound - and then it has that bottom rumbling sound, and then it has that wipeout sound.

And with my big 60-gauge strings - like, most guitar players are using sevens and eights and nines - the Slinkies (ph), you know, and 10s. My thinnest string is a 14 unwound, and then I use two 18 unwounds for my second and third string. And then my fourth string, I use a 38 wound. And my fifth, I use a 48. And then I use a 58 or a 60, whichever ones I can get.

GROSS: So this is, like, really thick strings you're using. And that gives it a deeper sound?

DALE: Yeah, it gives it a big - Joel Sullivan calls them bridge cables.

A science teacher from rural Kenya, who gives away most of his salary to support poor students, has won one of the world's richest teaching awards.

Franciscan monk Peter Tabichi was awarded the $1 million ($1.4 million) prize in recognition of his work in a deprived school that struggles with crowded classes and few resources.

"I feel great. I can't believe it. I feel so happy to be among the best teachers in the world, being the best in the world," he said after the award ceremony.

Mr Tabichi teaches at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village, where 95 per cent of his students live in poverty and 30 per cent are orphans or from single-parent families.

"The school is in a very remote area — most of the students come from very poor families, even affording breakfast is hard," he said in a statement released by the Global Teacher Prize.

Social issues such as drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and early marriage all contribute to high dropout rates from the classes crammed with as many as 80 students, he said.

He said he planned to use the prize money to improve the school and feed the poor.


 
Today, I learnt of the Pavlovian pea. Truth is a strange bedfellow: with a blue light and a fan, to replicate Pavlov's dog's notorious cues for food and the mouthwatering bell, we see exactly the same behavior in the humble pea plant which, after Pavlovian conditioning, moves toward the fan even when there's no light present. This amazing incident coincides: Connor was playing around the roots of a massive fallen tree. Then it sprang back upright, so I also learnt today to steer clear, or at least be cognizant of the potential of these remarkable intelligent creatures, whenever they're in dire straits. Connor's okay, by the way. Tough kid :)

I haven't (and am unlikely to) download and listen to the source. However, I would caution against believing the experiment as described above. It lacks (what I consider) obvious controls.

The experiment claims that after inducing a plant to grow in a direction by applying wind and light, applying only wind will cause the same effect. The most obvious controls are to repeat the experiment with plants that have not been subjected to the experimental conditions. So at a minimum, you need a plant that gets wind and light, one with light only, one with wind only, and one with no external stimulus.

Experiments are difficult because you must control all possible externalities. So much so, that published results are often criticized on the basis of controls and are often repeated with additional controls to determine if results are correct.
