Double Bass What do you guys drive?

I drive a Subaru Forester (2003). I can fit two people AND two basses, with the necks of the basses sticking up front between the driver and passenger. It's a nice option, since on more than one occasion I've had to drive a fellow bassist home after a rehearsal...or couldn't decide which bass I wanted to use that day. When just carrying one bass, it rests comfortably on its back and I can carry stands, sound equipment, and a stool as well.

Once, I think I got the bass and the whole band's equipment (PA system, gig bags, monitors, and a mando, fiddle and such) squeezed in (no room for other people though).

I drive a Jeep Wrangler. My URB and rig all fit, but are NOT comfortable. But I can go just about anywhere in it. I know, not too helpful. :hmm:

A good car to haul gear in during bad weather is the old Volvo 245 wagon. Not 4WD or AWD, but still quite good in the slop. They are cheap now and are very easy to work on if you are an automotive DIYer(like many "frugal of necessity" musicians).

My 1990 740 has 350,000+ miles on it and starts up and drives like a new car. But the trade off is that you will have to work on it a good bit and when you run into a problem that requires a shop it will be costly.

If you have the lucre, go with the new Volvo XC and start visiting the Brickboard at Invalid Link Removed to learn about which year model to get and what to expect from it.

I've lugged a double bass around in 5 different cars so far, first a 1970 Dodge Charger great but unrealistic now, Izzu trooper-great tons of space-too much gas even when it was 42 cents a liter, Saturn S series 2001 station wagon-great until the transmition went at 100km, Chevy Aveo great car, good on gas could fit double bass, small amp, and bebop drum kit as well as myself and drummer in car. New car VW city golf, same gas as Aveo, roomier, bit more room and better drive.

How in the world did you fit all that into an Aveo?! I'm not sure how you could get it in a Golf either! :eek: Those are a couple of pretty small cars! :D

it all fits in easy in the aveo, bass on it's side with neck between the seats, 110 cab beside it at the cargo dip in the back right side, acoustic image head underneath bass at back cargo hold, Drums stacked 18,14,12 on rear passenger right side, snare on top of amp, cymbals behind driver seat, in foot wells of back seat area, with the gulf I'm able to have a bit more room for all this but no blockage of blindspots etc. Really good cars for lugging stuff around.;)

What size basses do you all have? I have a 7/8 and find that it's hard to find cars that fit it - I can't imagine getting it into a sedan. I drive a 99 Saturn Wagon now, but it's at 105k right now and I'm trying to find something before it dies...

Has anyone heard anything about the Honda Fit? I've been scouring the pictures online and it seems like it might be able to fit my bass. I really need it to fit both an upright *and* another person though, so I think it might just be a wet dream.

I want to brag on my '03 Chevy Cavalier. This weekend I was able to pack the following:
3 leather gig bags and one hard shell case carrying a Sadowsky UV5, Pedulla MVp 4, Citron AE fretless 5, and an MTD 635, Epifani 3x10 NYC cab, Goliath III 2x10, 4 space Road case carrying Epifani 902C, Distressor Compressor and ELI Lil Freq, 4 space rack carrying Triton rack, Axon Ax100, and a single space 6 chanhel Behriger mixer (For my MIDI stuff), another SWR 1x10 workingman combo (I had to do a gig earlier in the day), pedalboard case carrying V-Bass unit, Samsonite handbag full of cables, etc, backpack with more cables, Digitech Talker, Jamman, X2 wireless, Monster cable HTS2000 power strip, Manhassett music stand, Gracie Stand (for suspending the Pedulla MVP 4 tenor bass), and my guitar player left his Hercules triple guitar stand so I had to lug that home with my stuff. I was able to get all of this stuff and still be comfortable driving. There was still a little room in the passenger seat for a few more things if necessary. I guess it's all in how you pack the car.
