what do you keep in your bass case?

Like many here, I carry a bag to gigs that has all sort of essentials in it... cables, tuner, batteries, screwdriver, tools, strings, etc.

Some other notes:

I roll up a T-shirt and keep in the bag. If I get way too sweaty, I have a shirt to change into.

Sham-wow. I kid you not. This is great for all sorts of stuff. I always find a use for it... from spilled beer to using it as a poor mans isolation pad for a kick drum mic.

Business cards. Both band cards and my own personal cards. You never know who you are going to meet.

Ear Plugs: I have earplugs stashed everywhere. My hearing is too valuable to screw around with. Also, because I sometimes play where children are present (street festivals and so on) I offer earplugs to kids. We aren't a loud band, but some kids don't like noise. If the kids aren't having a good time, the parents leave.

To me it seems kinda odd so many posting how much junk they carry in one case. Is that their only instrument?
Like you I take a couple, and can change my mind right before leaving the house which ones to bring. I would find it annoying having to transfer that much junk into the other case. My junk box stays with the amp, always.

my gig bag is like my purse, except in a non gay way. I keep an extra cable, extra strings, a few extra knobs I have kicking around, pickups and bridge covers when I'm just not feeling it, a screw drivers, allen wrenches, ear plugs, extra patch cables, a power cable, a box of picks, etc.

There are some good posts in this thread, but it still bothers me to see the stuff that some people cram into a bass case. As I said earlier, I discovered years ago that it works best for me to store all my equipment in separate cases, stored with the same gear in the same case, every time I use them. As soon as things start moving from case to case, the odds greatly increase that they will get lost or left behind when they're needed.

I've been an audio and video producer carrying lots of equipment around for 30+ years. I learned that equipment lasts longer when you don't over-stuff cases or put equipment where it can beat on other gear. I recommend carry cases which allow you to group your equipment by type and function, and which keep the vulnerable items (like basses) separated so that other items can't come in contact with them. In my case, I have a pedal board with a large nylon carry case which has room for all the accessory stuff. When I need to bring a wireless, that's in its own case. When I bring extra gear for supplemental cable runs, etc. that's in its own carry bag.

So in brief, that's a vote to store nothing, or as little as possible, in the bass case itself. My vote is to keep all the accessories (of which I have a lot) in other cases selected for that application. Of course, I'm not one of the NY city types that has to move around by subway or taxi - my system would not work for them...too many separate pieces.

For whatever reason, all the guys in my band have whatever we need. I have an extra drum key, the drummer (for some reason) carries an extra guitar cable in his bag. We can cover each other. Nothing wrong with thinking about your bandmates when you pack up.
