Like many here, I carry a bag to gigs that has all sort of essentials in it... cables, tuner, batteries, screwdriver, tools, strings, etc.
Some other notes:
I roll up a T-shirt and keep in the bag. If I get way too sweaty, I have a shirt to change into.
Sham-wow. I kid you not. This is great for all sorts of stuff. I always find a use for it... from spilled beer to using it as a poor mans isolation pad for a kick drum mic.
Business cards. Both band cards and my own personal cards. You never know who you are going to meet.
Ear Plugs: I have earplugs stashed everywhere. My hearing is too valuable to screw around with. Also, because I sometimes play where children are present (street festivals and so on) I offer earplugs to kids. We aren't a loud band, but some kids don't like noise. If the kids aren't having a good time, the parents leave.
