What happened to funk?

Agreed, the Wilson brothers are outstanding vocalist and while some of their songs were funky it's still not funk.

I can't read all these posts, but seriously guys. There's a huge disconnect here when it comes to defining funk.

The only reason I have a granular grasp on it, is because I was there.

And if you guys really want me to go off, bring up George Clinton, he's a joke.

However I think George may have written I just want to testify. I'll give him credit for that. And that song is way pre Parliament.

Lucas, earth wind and fire great band, brilliant song writing, production and arangements but again, not funk.

You assumed something about me because I didn't like that clip? I'm not surprised that some do like it, like I said, we have different barometers for this stuff. It reminded me of one of those later P-Funk things where there's a ton of people on stage and it's a free for all. I got bored with them too when they really only seemed to be playing good enough for a predominantly high crowd.

BTW New Birth... and one of my biggest early influences, Mandrill.

Not just disagreeing to be disagreeable..."Kalimba Song" is World Funk.

Again, the earlier stuff often was funk, not as raw as some but still funk. Like "Mighty, Mighty". This was before the high production values took over and they made the big money with David Foster.

Anyone interested in what the Commodores sounded like before they went full-on Pop, check out "Hot On The Tracks".

Can't side with you on the clip. Interesting that we're on the same page on somethings, I have no use for p-funk.

Mandrill, not a very good band from a technical perspective. Fence Walk, I'll give them a thumbs up on that one.

That says so much because IMO technical perspective has squat to do with funk. Those guys were the kings of doing funk with a world twist.

What would you call "Don't Mess With People", "Positive Thing" and "Peck Ya Neck"?

"Mango Meat". Wait until the bridge.

I think most would agree with you. However, I can't. I have a somewhat narrow scope and definition of funk.

Bootsy, I don't know.

I guess he did some stuff as a sideman with James brown and " hanging loose" was funky.
