What happened to funk?

Don't take my comments to seriously. I am a good reference for some of you, especially those that are completely lost.

And I'm not right about everything I've said.

I would say I'm dead on point with about 80% of it.

And my position and comments are just my opinion.

Now my curiousity is piqued. Early Parliament/Funkadelic no, Bootsy maybe, over the hill Sly yes? What else fits in your narrow scope.

Which shows that the idea that this is simple to determine couldn't be more offbase.

That's fine, your not the only one they fooled.

They actually came on the scene rather late in the game.

Some here will agree that they were way over the top on production ( space ships and guys playing in diapers ) and if you saw a live show, can you honestly say they were tight.

Think about it, how can any band be musically tight when you have more people on stage than in the audience.

The early 70's was late?

They didn't always have the stage show and diapers. Maybe that's coloring your recollection.

"Up For the Down Stroke"?

BTW funk does not have to be tight. It can be loose too.

You know, 20 years from now, there will be a TV commercial for sun tan lotion and the background music will be "hot fun in the summer time"

I am not sure Parliament will have stood the test of time that well. I'm not sure.

I've always dug TOP immensely since "You're Still a Young Man" came out. The cool thing about the funk I came up on was that even chops like Rocco's weren't needed or required. Definitely didn't need what most would consider good vocals either. It was about the ensemble and the song.

For me yes, to a degree. I was huge dyke & the blazers fan as well as baby Huey & the baby sitters.

Yep, that pretty much defines funk IMO too.

"I Got a New Pair of Roller Skates" has been used in several commercials over the years.

You may be serious, I don't know. Clinton's music has been used in lots of product placement... not that that proves anything other than it was popular.

At this point I'm just enjoying the ride.

I don't know what's going on with this thread. The Bar-Kays' "Holy Ghost" not funk? Earth, Wind & Fire not funk, Larry Graham didn't play bass on "Thank You". What's next I wonder. How is Earth, Wind & Fire not a funk band? "Shining Star"? "Jupiter"? "Serpentine Fire"? If the criterion for a band being a funk band is that all they played was funk then I can't name one "funk band". Find me a James Brown album that's nothing but funk. Sly And The Family Stone? While those guys were a very relevant group in the history of funk they were just as much a rock/pop/R&B band as they were a "funk" band.
