What Is fEARful and What Does It Make

I see many folks rave about fearful cabs.

After doing a Google search I find very little. They have extensive FACs, they criticize some of the questions asked, and it looks like the purchaser builds the cab or hires builders/woodworkers to do it. They recommend drivers and crossovers that need to be purchased from other sites. What do they actually make.

It seems like maybe they sell "plans" for the
"Do it Yourself" crowd? Forgive my opinion, but it seems like a lot of pride from a company that sells plans to build boxes? It seems like most speaker companies actually sell speakers.

And who is "Greenboy".

I see a company that can take all credit when things work out fine but able to distance itself and blame the builder if it doesn't.

Or am I missing something.

et voila
[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

you are missing several points in fact...
1.They are not a speaker company, they design cabinets (Speaker boxes) & crossovers.
2. they don't charge for the FEARful plans.
3. Greenboy is the designer of said cabinets/crossovers
4. If DIY is not your thing there are several authorized builders who could take care of it. I expect most of them stand by their product.

You are missing a lot! About 30k post here outlining the product line.

greenboy is a speaker cab designer. His original fEARful line was a DIY solution to cabs. The plans for the cabs, and cross overs are free. The speakers are specifically chosen to work with the designs.

Since not everyone out there is comfortable building their own cabs, greenboy has a couple of authorized builders who will build a cab. There are some cosmetic and material choices that may differ, but they will all stay true to the plans laid out by greenboy.

greenboy also has two other product lines that, but the plans are not available to anyone besides his builders. Those cabs can be purchased only as a finish product.

As far as pride goes, yeah greenboy and his builders are very proud of their work. All of them stand behind their builds. It doesnt hurt that they build cabs that IMHO far out perform anything you can find commercially. And to be clear at no point has anyone bought or paid for plans from greenboy. The free ones are free, and the exclusive ones are only available as a finished product.

As far as who greenboy is, he is kind of a recluse, but comes up with amazing bass cabs. He does not distance himself from his builders, or the DIYers who take on a project. In fact he has a whole [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] dedicated to helping people with their cabs.

Yes you are missing the point! Actually you're missing quite a few points,

Greenboy is a member of this forum. He still occasionally drops by.

The plans are NOT sold but shared freely.

The reason behind the design is to use some of the newer drivers that have been developed in the last few years. Using the plans and advice from the fEARful thread, a person who is handy with DIY wood work can build a speaker system superior to commercial offering.

As the "box" is specifically tailored to the specific drivers chosen, only those drivers will work properly in the box.

fEarful is there DIY cabinets.

fEarless cabs are built by authorized builders.

For whatever reason, talking about either line here is akin to the great Fender P Bass debate. No matter what thread pops up, sooner or later someone starts foaming and frothing at the mouth. :D

I do not own any of the DIY's cabs. I own two of the fEarless cabs built through BNA Audio. I will be ordering a third this week. And yes, I am a rabid fan.

The forum listed above, will answer any questions that you may have.

OOPS sorry. Others have chimed in.

Yes, I think you might be.

Looks like someone's out for a little Monday morning sTROLL.

That sounds like a really fun project!

What cabs are you building? Make sure you mirror one of the baffles so you can borrow each other's cabs for a really big rig!

Ohhh thanks - they will both be for me. Two 15/6. They will be powered by my Carvin BX1500. My Dad doesn't play any music besides the volume nob, be he's a killer craftsman.

I'm trying to spend as much time with him while we can still do fun stuff together. Life is short = no regrets.

Cheers :)

2 15/6s? You might find that 1 is already overkill and end up selling the other. Or you might develop a sideline crushing kidney stones and doing demolition work with your bass rig:p

I just spent an hour on the website. Actually several links there - one to Bill Fitzmaurice's site who used to post here in TB. (His plans are for sale but pretty cheap at about $15) A question I didn't see answered is this: there's no mention of power ratings. Is that up to you when you choose the cabs and speakers? I would love to build my own small cabs for use in small venues; something that could handle 100-200 watts just fine but could still kick. My question is: do you decide first what your power and volume needs are, then go though their plans and choose what will work?

The best way is to first determine how loud you need to be, then what sort of voicing you like. Now pick a cab that has the voicing you like and determine how much power it needs to meet your SPL goal. Watts do not translate directlty to SPL output, and no one really cares how many watts they are using if you meet your volume goal.

Power ratings in the sense of what is written on most commercial cabs are effectively meaningless. Overall with cabs you should decide your tone needs, pick a cab to suit that, and add more until volume need is met. With Fearfuls, they are neutral toned, so you choose the amp for the tone, and enough Fearful to give required volume. The only meaningful power handling specs that can be applied to cabs come in graph form, and that graph shows how far ahead of commercial offerings fearfuls come, plus they are in the FAQ earlier in the thread

Sounds like a 12/6 to me. The cool thing is these cabs are very responsive to eq and can do anything from dub to vintage to hifi to slap without a second thought.

I like the idea of the 12/6 because if later you decide to add a second 12/6 you will have one formidable rig capable of wonderous things. :bassist:

Thanks for the quick posts! I'm at the website again right now. Don't know how I missed the FAQ other than I was there about 2 am.
I honestly like the PJB suitcase with the ext speaker but don't want to part with $1800. That has 8 6" speakers and 300 watts. That puts out pretty much what I want and need on a regular basis. I'll check out the 12/6. Thanks again.
