What is missing from chorus pedals?

Decent sounding chorus
The ability to produce full range without loss of highs or lows
Some sort of clean / effect blend
Variable crossover for the user to decide how low the bass freq. is set for the effect

After owning the Boss CEB-3, EHX Neo Clone, EHX Stereo Electric Mistress and a few multis like the Zoom B1, MS60B and Marshall Regenerator and currently stomping an MXR Bass Chorus (which I like and have no plans to change), the best chorus I've played so far is the MXR Stereo Chorus, so it's obviously gonna b a point of reference for me:

Pros:
- depth switch
- eq (bass/treble)
- tweakability: intensity, rate, width
- stereo outs

Cons:
- 18v (not for everybody)
- size

The only thing I thought was missing is a BLEND knob.

EDIT: maybe I'm off my rocker, but as the chorus could be last in chain on smaller boards, wouldn't a DI feature be useful ? I realize we're not talking about the same price, but still ?

+1. I must be one of the few ppl that actually likes chorus effects?! I have and love the Tech 21 BBC, and I'd love to try a Polytope. Find some way to dump the warble, and I'm onboard! ;)

No warble if you keep the right toggle (the modulation switch) flicked to the left side, which I usually do. Then it's just a static detune effect that still sounds chorus-y at the right settings on the detune knob.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I want to try the Polytope, I knew it had the Detune feature. I was mainly just responding to Bongomania's question about what I want in a chorus pedal-no warble! If he's thinking about doing a chorus pedal, I'd love for it to have a static Detune feature....:bassist:

There's been a bunch of great ideas.

I can think of a few choruses I've tried that had a sort of brittle, sterile sound - it would be nice to bake "warmth" into a chorus to give it that nice enveloping quality.

It's interesting that so many folks are saying "blend knob". Al analog choruses inherently include clean blend--that's how it sounds like two voices. But maybe the ratio of that blend needs more variety and control.

I'm definitely getting some good ideas from this thread!

Whats put me off in the past and kept me away from them is that the ones I've tried (all mainstream, no boutique) seem to loose the bottom end and there are limited ways to alter the actual chorus effect itself. I've never tried anything that I can get significantly enough away from Come As You Are for me to buy one.

As I understand it (just googled it now!) the chorus splits the signal and adds delay and vibrato to one, then plays two signals out. So what I'd personally like to try would be a way to manage each signal in that chain in terms of simple EQ and options to mould the effect. That would be a significant amount of knobs though.

For me, a blend is not needed when I want "full on/obnoxious" sounding effects. But when I want the "I didn't know it was on till it was turned off" sounding effects, the only way to do that right, is with a blend knob.

Well, since it hasn't been mentioned it needn't be said that it should have a low noise floor with little hiss. Oops. I guess I said what needn't be said.

I'd like one built into a treadle vol/wah-style enclosure, so you can speed up and down the swirl for that Leslie organ-like sound.

I plan on getting the Dr Scientist Cosmichorus, as it's suitable for my [DEL]needs[/DEL] wants. It can take two different expression pedals, one for rate and a CV one for sweep.
:hyper:
Alas, it's said to be a little on the noisy side... :hmm:

Delay should go from flanging through chorus all the way to quick slap.
Sweep speed from very slow to very fast.
Sweep depth from subtle to insane.
Sweep wavefrom from square to sin and in between, maybe random S&H style too.
Regen/feedback set so it can go into self oscillation.
Hold switch.
Stereo or dual mono switchable.
Mix.
A "Dimension D" button.

...in a micro pedal format.

That's the best description, yet. My super-cheap DigiTech X series has a level control which pretty much serves as a "wet / dry" or blend although the drier settings do sap a bit of the low end. As mentioned, the increased depth a la "Come As You Are" is too extreme when a subtle ambience is all that's required.

Honestly, what I would love would be a dual chorus where you could either switch between a Detune chorus or a standard Modulated chorus. Or, preferably, having the option of both. That is probably getting a little too demanding though

I don't see why that is too much to ask. The Polytope already does this in theory with its modulation on/off switch... ideally someone could do the exact same thing except with the "modulation" side being a bit warmer and more traditional.
