+1 on the Soundwear. I have the Performer and after several years of use, it hardly shows any wear. And I'm very rough with my baggage.
I got mine with my bass, but same here. Great bag. Weighs a ton, but the peace of mind is worth it.

The Reuninon Blues is the closest thing to a hard shell case without the hard shell. I agree that there are some downsides, but other than the shoulder straps being a sardonic joke, these are minimal.
I like to wear the bass when I have to walk up these hills in San Francisco. Much easier than pushing it uphill on a wheel. Here's one no one has mentioned yet: S. Eastman, very affordable, lots of padding and holds up to abuse like a champ.
