Double Bass What is the Best Soft Padded Case (Gig Bag)?

There are a lot of bags on the market that seem nice when they're new. However I've seen too many fall apart after a relatively short time. I have a Mooradian bag that is about 8 years old and is still going strong. It is in near-perfect condition and has never required any repairs. The Mooradian bag is also relatively lightweight and very compact when folded up. I've come to really despise heavy, bulky bags. I'd recommend the Mooradian bag highly. Made in the USA (unlike many other bags) and still the industry standard.

I've got 3.

Bob Gollihur's bag for short, close at home gigs (rarely used by me I like lots of stuff). $130 from Bob via ebay

A used Reunion Blues bag (burgandy color, glad it's not black to draw the heat) I love the shoulder straps and lots of pockets, good padding, no problems, prior owner replaced the zippers. Used off Ebay $250 (shipping included)

A Protec bag, the best padding of the three and the heaviest. The oldest of the three, have replaced one handle with leather strap and short nuts, washers & bolts. About $220 about 10 years ago.

Mostly the Reunion Blues bag gets the call.

FWIW, the shoulder straps on the Soundwear Performer are quite comfy. :spit: I like to wear the bass when I have to walk up these hills in San Francisco. Much easier than pushing it uphill on a wheel. :)

Mooradian.

I just got a custom fitted one to replace the one I had used for about 10 years. I only needed a new one because I had an extension added a little while ago and the seams were getting stressed in places. Otherwise the old one is in great shape and waiting for me to buy another bass to put in it. :) I was very impressed with the improvements they had made to a bag that was already the best I had ever owned. I've had a custom case, a Reunion Blues, and my students have had various others, including Soundwear. Mooradian every time, for me, especially if you're talking quality as opposed to price.

Is the material and padding on the Eastman similar to what's used on the Bobbelock (sp?)? If so, I'm not a big fan; they don't seem to me like they conform to the shape of an instrument very well and just feel sort of sloppy and bulky. I like the feel and fit of the Mooradian a lot better; they're more soft and form fitting. Like a good pair of cycling shorts. lol...

It appears on first inspection that the Eastmasn cases and the Presto case that Steve Swan sells are one and the same. I just got the Presto, and man it's a nice case! Certainly not as coffin-like as the RB, but well padded, lots of handles and pockets, great zippers, well done sewing, etc. Call Steve Swan for a quote on one. Try steveswanguitars.com

Thh same thing happened to my Upton bag. A tailer looked at it and identified the "machine," as he called it, as being the culprit. It is flimsey, can get out of shape and then it doesn't get the zipper teeth together correctly. I had an old totally ratty gig bag that did have good zippers. For $10, the tailer switched the zipper machines and now my bag works fine again. I never would have figured the fix was so simple. Maybe this will help other folk.
