What is the 'old' TalkBass?

I joined when I was 18 and said a lot of stupid crap, surprised I never got banned. But there's always hope for the future!

Also does anyone remember that compilation CD comprised of TB members music titled "When the Talk Stops", or something. I think I lost my copy over 20 years ago. I can't imagine that happening on a forum anymore.

But it’s not physics. It’s art :)

To each their own, but I don’t think any amount of success gives someone license to be a jerk or act infallible….especially when the line between “layperson” and “famous professional” is razor thin, as it often is in art/music. Good, solid information can be found anywhere.

I couldn’t remember when I joined TB, but found that I’ve been here 15 years.

I don’t think the essence of TB has changed very much, but I think there used to be more interesting in-depth discussions than there are now. That may be nothing more than how many times the same subjects come up (like what color of pick guard someone should have).

2005 guy here. I can’t really remember a lot about the old days except I knew nothing when I got here except old SVTs and Ricks were cool. I used to think the bass really didn’t matter (let alone strings or pickups), and it was all about the amp - tube amp…and I spent almost all my TB time in the Amps section. Psycho Bass Guy…whatever happened to him?

Now when I stop in, I’m in the classifieds 90% of the time. The other time I’m researching something I know nothing about. I’m usually way late on the hot thing.

What I miss the most from the old Talk Bass is the old classifieds and more specifically, the pricing. I think you can get into the classifieds and flip to oldest first? I did that once and wow…used to be able to get a Rick or 62RI for less than $1K all day long. Well, new ones were a little over $1100 so yeah..

It is really weird coming across one of your old posts or threads from like 2006 or 2009, etc… cringy

Moderators have been good for the years I've been on here. I find some clubs are like friends to me, safe places where we disagree but don't shout rude names at each other. I like that.

I miss some folks who I thought were funny and cool, but people drop away all the time. The fact that top notch pros comment here often is a big reason to come back.

Oh, and I once got penalty points for telling someone to "bite me." I respect that. I took the points gladly because he deserved it.

I've gotten a couple of warnings myself. I can live with that, but what bugs me is the trophies. I've been awarded several, but not one brings with it any coupons to fast food franchises or frequent flyer miles.

That analogy would be relevant if Hawking or Sagan walked in like a jerk and started talking down to all of the elementary school teachers.

I don’t care how genius you are; if you act like a jerk then most of your credibility goes out the window.
