I've been here long enough to be considered "old guard". Sure it's changed, as it should. At least I'd hope it would change as everything else does. I don't see it as better or worse. I'd say it's been fairly consistent and the changes that I have seen have been appropriate. I appreciate that they continue to moderate the discussions to keep stuff from devolving into the usual discussion board cesspool.

I appreciate all that have contributed over the years and the many that still do! Mostly, I keep coming back for the classifieds which are richer than ever with great many cool-ass basses.

Yeah, tread lightly, there was a time when moderation was rather looser than it is now, and the change over caused some regulars to leave. I was a member back then, but wasn't active on here, I was still mostly over on HCBF (which flamed out and self-destructed because they weren't willing / able to apply the kind of moderation changes that happened here). Note that publicly questioning moderation is ill advised and a rules violation, so be careful when "near that line".

This thread coincides with a convo I'm having with some mates about social media. Noting that Facebook, Instagram, twitter, tiktok, bluesky,... none of these things that we call social media are social at all, anymore.
Maybe we've travelled a circle, where forums like this one are more true (and pleasant) examples of social media than anything else is.

Some "famous professionals" thought their assumed status gave them license to be a jerk. That's not exactly something to rose tint, IMO.

Maybe, but I would worry rather have access to the knowledge and experience and risk the beratement. It always seems like a novice or a layperson would argue, get feelings hurt, and then moderation would discipline the more experienced professional.

If we were a physics forum, it would be equivalent to having a Steven Hawking or Carl Sagan get in an argument with some elementary school science teacher. The layman would get their feelings hurt (or more usually ego bruised because they were not as smart as they thought). Then, as a result, we lose Hawking but the science teacher gets to stay around toting their ignorance for another decade.

I joined in 2008 but took a break from 2014 to 2018, if my post history is correct. It was mostly because I wasn't playing much bass, and was more seriously into keys (still am), but I also recall finding some aspects of the forum unpleasant. Since my return, I've found it to be one of the better places on the Internet. In fact, I'd say it's in the top three places I even bother to post in anymore. Whatever the mods are up to, I approve. And y'all are nice too.

He passed in 2021. It was really sad, more so if you happened to follow him on Facebook. One of those things where he chronicled his battle with cancer, thought he’d beaten it, then it came back, all that. Toughest loss I can remember of a person I’d never actually met.

I've been here since 2006......The music industry has changed greatly in the past 17 years. In 2006, Pop and Rock bands were still putting out albums that were getting mainstream play. Live music and bands were still an important part of culture....... its not like that anymore: bands are now a niche market, albeit a substantial one. The term 'Rockstar' is obsolete - a lot of folks strive to be TikTok stars or social media influencers ( much easier: talent not necessary)...

and a lot of players since the mid 00s (for whatever reason including age and RIP) no longer play....

The current TB is only a reflection of the current state of the industry around it and, it seems for a lot of folks my age and older, they can't wrap that around their heads and let go of the past. YMMV

I have seen a number of references to the 'old' TalkBass recently... "missing the 'old' TalkBass..." "the 'old' TalkBass was better..." etc.

I joined TalkBass in 2019. And over the last 5 years I've noticed no significant changes in TB. I can only assume I am a part of the 'new' TalkBass; the one that isn't as good as its predecessor.

Can someone please explain to me how the 'old' and 'new' TalkBass differ? When did it change? And why it's not as good as it used to be?

It doesn't exist, much like the proverbial 'good old days' in general.

I became a member back in Aug of 2000. Topics change as music, gear, etc. evolves - otherwise, it’s fairly similar… except for the dinosaurs. There were a lot of dinosaurs back in the day.

I haven't seen tons of changes. I mean some of the best choices are STILL "carrots", "YMMV", "flats and a pick on a P with a tort pickguard", and the "best bass for metal". And some of the standard harsh replies quickly delivered are about failure to use the "search function" even for a total noob.

Lots seems the same. To me. Overall. I guess.

I reckon time on TB in two ways: BEFORE the great ESP Power Cable Debate and AFTER the great ESP Power Cable Debate. It happened during that magical summer of 2011. It was a different time: Charlie Sheen was soaked in tiger blood, A young Adele taught us how to laugh again, The CIA and Navy SEALs killed Osama Bin Laden.. and taught us how to laugh again. And all over talkbass people were weighing in to debate the merits of $250 power cables. My goodness, it was the internet at its finest.

I joined around the time when the only good basses were either a Sadowsky or an SX bass.

There was also that one troll that made a ton of posts about how nickelback was the greatest band ever and their bass player had such a heavy tone.

It was fun. I still enjoy it here.
