What is the 'old' TalkBass?

There used to be many more famous professionals contributing. Unfortunately most of them got banned or got tired of not being able to voice their opinions for fear of moderation.

Same goes for technical experts and industry innovators . There used to be many heated discussions hashing out different design approaches for gear. There was a lot more advanced common knowledge due to this. There was a time where questions about the sound of a particular speaker size all but vanished. There were multiple upstarts in all areas of equipment that were changing the face of the bass guitar industry. They have almost all disappeared due to commercial user disputes or other hastles with moderation.

The search function was encouraged more, and most members used it before asking their question.

I miss the Talkbass of the early and mid 2010's. You could come one here and see discussions of actual new topics or ideas. Now it's back to putting 4x10's on 1x15's and which size speaker sounds best for metal...

Old TB is when it was ok to mix speaker sizes, fan noise was not an issue nor was 60 cycle hum. HPFs were for synthesizers and bassists did not use pedalboards, the stage and a $6 daisy chain was all we needed for our Bassdrive and Big Muff. tuners were rackmounted and cabinets were carpeted. Schroeder cabs were the science and until the Fearful/Fearless/Greenboy proved them wrong

I forgot about this. I had an Image Shack account solely because at the time there was no native way to upload photos directly to TB. You had to use an embed link from an image hosting site like Image Shack or the more popular Photo Bucket.

dont forget transferring the photos from you 8 megapixel camera to your PC. good luck if you lost your PC to camera cable.

I don't know exactly. I joined in 05 just as I switched from guitar to bass to learn and gain insight into my new chosen instrument. I'm still here and I must say I've learned a ton from more experienced folks on TB over the years. I hope to be a resource for others going forward. But I still have a ton to learn myself. Kinda wild to think about all that time and what had happened since. I got out of the Army, moved back to my hometown with my wife, had 3 kids, played in several different bands... it's been a wild ride!

That's not what I was referring to. I was saying I don't exactly know the answer to the OP's question about the "old TB." Haven't noticed that it's changed all that much.

There was a guy who's username was "nobody" and there were endless plays on words using the word nobody. It was apparently hilarious. There was also a guy who loved Lemmy and Thailand. He's gone now. But he was great.

They were both remarkably accomplished trolls. I do miss “nobody”, that bit was pretty clever.

I appreciate no such thing as old vs. new TB. I just miss some "old" voices that are unfortunately gone or lost (may they RIP while we keep them alive in our memory). Guess that's life. People you usually enjoy reading become part of your journey. Lots of the information and experiences you share here have enriched my life, and still do, frequently, to this day. That hasn't changed in my 20 years around this community.

Some "famous professionals" thought their assumed status gave them license to be a jerk. That's not exactly something to rose tint, IMO.
