What is the 'old' TalkBass?

Is that one a continuation of the old FDP that had Moe's Tavern and all that?

strict moderation is the price we pay for having a sustainable chill welcoming space.

I have seen many forums and online communities fracture and self destruct over the lifespan of the internet. TB has been uncommonly stable for an online community and I believe the "strict" moderation is responsible for that. Even in the members lounge forums where politics and religion are allowed, I do not recall the discussion getting too divisive or toxic.

Keeping this place more or less welcoming and respectful to all has been pretty cool.

Not sure about that. The Moes Tavern thing doesn’t ring a bell but I only became a member in 2000 or so.

I don't gel well with newer social media. I like boards like these. It lets me formulate my thoughts and have deeper and richer interactions with others.

As I remember it, on "old" talkbass more people were gassing for Eden amps and hating Fender. A couple of hardcore collectors were posting detailed comparisons of amps and cabs. Certain people would actually post invites to gatherings at their house. Teenage trolls were off the leash and looking for a scrap. And there was more to be said that hadn't been said yet, here.
A lot of the differences now are good. All of the history is a great resource. But it's great that there are lots of people here willing to happily answer a noob question, not driving them away or telling them to spend a week reading old posts to get an answer.
It's just slightly less a boys club now, maybe?

I can’t even tell because I go to Home first and read the four tabbed pages which are just the latest and most active posts. I never go into the individual forums.

This is a strong point. The current presentation feeds us topics while the old one required us to find things we were interested in. I also hardly ever get past the “latest” and “most active” pages.

I have to believe the result is that we have similar topics appearing all the time and people finding themselves in threads they don’t really care about. It might be affecting the quality of the discourse.

It's interesting when people talk about old users being "run away" from forums. With any discussion group, for better or worse, there usually ends up being an implied hierarchy and a pecking order and certain members start thinking their opinions are infallible. Sometimes those members can't handle anyone disagreeing with their views, so they take their ball and go home. I wouldn't throw anyone under the bus by name, but I've seen that happen a lot of times. It's a shame, because those folks usually had terrific input, they were just very stubborn and couldn't handle differing opinions. I do see A LOT less of this than I used to, maybe because things are better moderated.

I wouldn't say I was a part of old TB, but I do remember the app. Loved the app. My first account on here was in college in 2013. Back then things were deff a little more loosey goosey. Some threads about attractive individuals that wouldn't fly these days, not that I'm lamenting that change. When threads popped off and anger escalated, it tended to be more pointed. People can still be jerks on here, but they take a little more effort to bury it in clean language and lofty general gesticulating into the ether instead of being direct. There were also some knowledgeable and kindhearted folks that have since departed that are missed.

I suppose the folks that have since gone and the ease of the app are about all I can be nostalgic about. The good info didn't go anywhere. There's still good people on the site. There's also just as much whinging about offending one another, complaining about being PC, and "internet person shakes fist at sky" as there was when I decided to take a break from the site cause I wasn't getting anything from it other than seeing eye-roll worthy nonsense.

It's a mixed bag, but I suppose I'm still enjoying myself and feelin it's still positive usually. Though these days I hang in humor and band management threads or on the main page.

There were post by mods past that wouldn't fly today AT ALL.

Just to give an example of how PC it’s become, I once posted a picture of a bird ... a BIRD! that looked like a certain political character (I can’t mention). The post was removed, and I got a warning. But, what gets me is that someone actually had to complain first.

For me it's two things

1) Different group of people. Not saying the newer group is any way lesser, just different. There was a period of time where member count growth was prioritized and at least the perception was that if a new person came in a badgered someone that's been on the site for awhile, if the long timer said anything back, they were banned. Anyways, that was my perception at least.

2) The format changed to where in the older format it was easier to look through the subforms and now I spend most of my time on "Active Today" only going into subform land when I'm searching for something. So that gives the site a very different feel.

I have seen a number of references to the 'old' TalkBass recently... "missing the 'old' TalkBass..." "the 'old' TalkBass was better..." etc.

I joined TalkBass in 2019. And over the last 5 years I've noticed no significant changes in TB. I can only assume I am a part of the 'new' TalkBass; the one that isn't as good as its predecessor.

Can someone please explain to me how the 'old' and 'new' TalkBass differ? When did it change? And why it's not as good as it used to be?

It's when we agreed Warwick was better than Spector. I assume nothing will happen after I say this.

I originally joined in 2007 and was active through 2010 under a different account with an email address I no longer have. I rejoined about 2 years ago. It's definitely more n00b friendly than it was back then, but I some of the powerhouse members are either no longer here or no longer with us and it's a real shame.

On the plus side, I haven't seen a rage quit since I rejoined, so there's that. It's also a rule now that you can't refer to a Bongo as a toilet seat. Back then, it was all the rage. Life was tough in the early days of the Bongo club lol.

I haven't changed much though. Still a Spector and MM guy.
