What is the 'old' TalkBass?

Is that one a continuation of the old FDP that had Moe's Tavern and all that?

I hung out at the old FDP before I joined up here. I see it's been rebooted under new management. The bass area in the old iteration was pretty dead so I spent most time in Moe's Tavern until I got tired of the blowhards there.

The people complaining that they get suspended or banned for trolling or saying racist/sexist crap probably aren’t the people I want to hear from anyhow.

It's usually framed like it was innocuous but the question that always immediately comes to mind is "...and how was that in any way related to bass in the context of what you're replying to?"

There was a guy who's username was "nobody" and there were endless plays on words using the word nobody. It was apparently hilarious.

been a member since 2001, biggest change has been the gear, especially amps, pedals and strings. a lot more tube talk back then with some real experts (Psycho) . lots of QSC and Crown, SWR, Eden and Hartke discussions. Class D was not a thing. Fulltone was as booteek as it got for pedals and noone cared about compressor pedals. DR were considered the new kids in the string world taking on D'addario, GHS and Rotos.
There was barely any flatwound talk back then and sharing pictures was a 16 step process.

I learned a ton though, there really weren't any other online bass resources that came close in terms of content and knowledge.

Now, perhaps because of TB, I am now a staunch advocate of active instruments.

Just to give an example of how PC it’s become, I once posted a picture of a bird ... a BIRD! that looked like a certain political character (I can’t mention). The post was removed, and I got a warning. But, what gets me is that someone actually had to complain first.

2013 is not old. i would consider anything pre-iphone as old TB. Once people no longer needed to be behind a desktop computer to participate, it changed

I forgot about this. I had an Image Shack account solely because at the time there was no native way to upload photos directly to TB. You had to use an embed link from an image hosting site like Image Shack or the more popular Photo Bucket.

I don't know exactly. I joined in 05 just as I switched from guitar to bass to learn and gain insight into my new chosen instrument. I'm still here and I must say I've learned a ton from more experienced folks on TB over the years. I hope to be a resource for others going forward. But I still have a ton to learn myself. Kinda wild to think about all that time and what has happened since. I got out of the Army, moved back to my hometown with my wife, had 3 kids, played in several different bands... it's been a wild ride!

My first thought was the old TalkBass was a bulletin board called “The Bottom Line” which started in 1993 by a college kid named Erik Habinga. It was all new - this internet thing and an amazing time. Jeff Berlin, Carol Kaye and Chuck Rainey posted quite often. There were organized collaborative cassette releases of bass players music, and endless discussion about - is an electric bass really just a guitar? There was one troll by the name of “fingers” who was chastising everyone for the forum just being a shopping site and not about bass playing. Was he wrong? I believe the term GAS started on that site.

Anyone else remember it?

Wow, really? I suspect that my first thought pertained to being
hungry or wet & in need of a diaper change; possibly both.

Hopefully, those will not also be my last thoughts.

It’s a calmer community these days. I do miss some of the older posters who no longer or rarely participate on the site, but I don’t miss some of the crazies who were seemingly looking to start something with anyone who’d give them the slightest opening.
