There are so many before Peter Gabriel left, hardly any after. Then it's difficult because so many 'songs' are actually songs within songs.

If there is one single track that encapsulates much of their style, packing chiming 12 string guitars, lyrical flutey bits, Mellotron and Hammond 'orchestral' bits, Moog bass pedals, a quirky Hackett solo and an equally quirky Rutherford and Rickenbacker bassline all into a few minutes it's got to be 'Can-Utility and the Coastliners'

Supper's Ready and Squonk are my favorites. I am just the opposite of many Genesis fans in that I really disliked Peter Gabriel's shtick when he was with them. IMO he was not entertaining he looked like an escapee from a mental institution. I happen to LOVE his solo work so don't be hating me for having an opinion. I became a fan after hearing "Second's Out".

No hate. I just think that Genesis needed the darkness and sense of menace that Gabriel bought to the party. They're far too sugary for my taste after his departure and can easily wander into the twee - especially with the lyrics. Phil Collins was/is an amazing drummer at his best, but I think he should've stayed behind the kit.

I really liked them up to ABACAB, after that not so much so I think we, at least, partially agree. I didn't care for their more pop oriented sound. Collins and Bruford together blew my mind.

+1. I definitely hate post-Gabriel Genesis, but love almost everything from the Gabriel + Hackett era. Just to mention the first song that popped up in my head, I'd say "Watcher Of The Skies".
