What is your "gift" as a player.

Having 'retired' from bands for a number of years (got fed up with the petty politics), and spending a LOT of time writing, recording, playing a lot of guitar etc. in my garage, my sense of timing is actually pretty good. Playing with programmed drums means never having to follow a unreliable drummer. Plus it makes me tend to think like a producer in songwriting situations (I have a band now..). I hear things as they 'should' be on a recording, and adjust the song accordingly (harmonies, bridges, arrangements etc.).

Understanding how the band fits together (I either play bass, rhythm or lead, and tend to act as MD for the band).

Timing - our pro drummer (and human metronome) has complimented me on how I fit with the drums.

Of course, that's probably because I've got no real technique to speak of and mostly just pound the root. :)
