What is your "gift" as a player.

God made me FUNKY. My wife says that when I go to an open mike and they let me play the whole thing just changes. The music and band sounds more powerful and it gets real funky, no matter what kind of music is being played. She says you can tell the difference and can tell that I'm playing. I'm not fancy, don't have all of the signature flashy chops, but I'm solid, have great tone and can simply rock the house and when I play I have no notion about what I sound like. I just really become part of the music. Most of this is not my opinion but what I've been told by others. As soon as others hear me play they're like so who do you play with.

What is your most noteworthy bass playing attribute?

A couple things:

I have a very good ear. And I generally play very tastefully.

I am able to pretty effectively translate whatever I'm hearing in my mind's ear - or my real ears - into a part that is musically distinctive, yet appropriate at the same time. It's all about style. And I started to establish and refine mine from practically the first day I began to play the instrument.

mine is having the ability to play anything i hear almost immediately. i have great relative pitch and perfect pitch.
good time, good tone and ability to interweave thoughtful, melodic lines into whatever i am playing.

I don't consider myself an exceptionally technical player, but I do focus on pushing myself technically with each new song I learn.

I'm also not afraid to lay back and let other have the spotlight in the music, but other times I love to embellish when there's not much going on.

And I love to jump around, get in the crowd, etc. People compliment me most on my stage energy/presence. So I guess I can suck royally but if I look like I'm having a blast people like it :)

Peace,
Greg

My gift has nothing to do with my playing ability. I have always considered my self a fairly mediocre bass player. I am pretty solid and can lock in with the drummer, nothing fancy. But, my gifting is as an entertainer. Every band I have every been in, other than my first HS band in the 60's, I was the front man. If there was some goofy outfit to wear for a particular song, I did it. When we did Mr. Bojangles, I put on an old man mask and overcoat and went and harassed all of the good looking women in the club. I did all of the talking on the mike. My gift is really working an audience. Never any dead air time in my bands. During first set when generally no one was dancing I would either be harassing the audience (all in fun) or my other band members between songs. In the 70"s I was in a 4 piece show band that did 2 floor shows a night(those where full week gigs). Our first show was a 50's show which we dressed up for. Our second show showcased our vocals with strong harmony work from groups like the
Beach Boys, Carpenters, and the Letterman. Just playing music was never enough for me. Maybe because I wasn't that good. Through the years I have come to learn why I wanted to be the center of attention. I am the baby in my family and birth order experts will tell you that most entertainers are last borns.
