I must be the odd ball here. To me as long as the strings are new they ALL sound great. I replace my strings after about 8 to 10 hours of playing, which works out to be every two gigs give or take.
I've used every brand under the sun. Tried all the new fangled cyro steel and hermetically sealed crap and after all is said and done I'll take whatever is on sale. Cheap and plentiful is what I say.
Buy 'em cheap and you can afford to Change 'em often. Nothing sounds like a fresh set of strings.
Carvin sells 5 string sets for $12.00 and I hear they're made by D'adarrio or something similar(the only thing i've ever bought at Carvin, not that there is anything wrong with that)
I've even heard of guys who boil their strings and haven't changed 'em in years -eeewww-
I've heard rumors that all the strings come from the same 2 or 3 manufacturers anyway. They just slap a different label on 'em.
But that's just me...
