I know what i used to use and won't use anymore. GHS bombers. They suck compared to say D'addario Steels
Holy sh*t. I just started using Nickel Roto 66's from being really happy with a new set of Prosteels.
I was a DR loyalist(SS Lo-Riders and before that, Sunbeams) before this and the Nickel 66's feel almost like Sunbeams with more upper mid aggression than the Prosteels. (I thought they would be too mellow bc they are nickel.)

Dude, Faith, you really need to stop putting up the strings you try and switch around to hahaha I just spent about $40 on strings the last week on Pro Steels mainly so I could try them. I LOVE them. A LOT. I was a DR loyalist too for a while there (Low Riders and Fat Beams). I was using the Roto steels on and off too but they were dying out to quick on me. I cant imagine the nickels being brighter and more aggressive than the Pro Steels.......

In 2008-2009 I used Rotosound flatwounds on my main bass. I have never tried other flatwounds and I'm not sure if I would. I absolutely loved these strings on my '62 reissue P-Bass and my 2008 American Standard P.
I use D'Adarrio XLs (medium) for roundwounds, which I've now used for the last few years. Trying a set of their half-wounds on my main bass next week to see if I can bridge the gap between flat and wound, tone wise. Then I'll keep the XLs on my back-up for the versatility.
Anything Ernie Ball is poopie IMO - they fade quickly, even the Cobalt strings. Does bring me back to my early teens to see one of those orange packs, though

Gregmon, if you like the Prosteels, stick with them for a bit. I was over-worried about fretwear and actually meant to get the nickel66's at GC, but when I got there they didn't have the blue package like they said on the phone. The Prosteels were packaged airtight and the Rotobass nickels(unsilked version) looked old as dirt.
I liked the Prosteels a lot too, and they are definitely higher tension than the 66's. But the 66's seem to have this sweetness in the mids. Plus, some other TBer said they last a lot longer than the SS version. I have a feeling the SS doesnt 'last' is because the windings peel off skin faster!
I'll put up clips later comparing the two, if you like.

Please do. I'd like to hear the a/b of them. I just can't sell myself gettin down on some nickels when all I want is steel aggressiveness.

Well, I'm not sure all the settings were exact, but I had the bright switch on for the Prosteels on my GK and it off for the Rotos. But I also had the treble knob turned up more with the Rotos....so yeah.
Same overdrive settings pretty much, same Audix I5.....same uhhh...miraculously bad playing. Oh, and the Roto's are slinkier so my ham-fisted playing really let me know when I pushed them too far(which may hurt you on severely dropped tuning). But I like something about them, especially the "chunk" they have on the staccato open E motif.(I also need to practice muting with my left hand more

Recently I've been using Sadowsky Black Label Flatwounds on my Sadowsky NYC Modern 5-24. I like the tone it gives on that bass. I also use DRs, Sunbeams on my Kinal and Fatbeams on my Modulus VJ. On my Lakland Bob Glaub PJ I use LaBella flatwounds or GHS Precision Flats. I keep GHS Pressurewounds on my fretless and on my Linc Luthier semi-hollow I am waiting on some LaBella White Nylon Copper Tapewound strings that I ordered a month ago, and currently it's wearing Ken Smith Taperwound Burners.
I've tried lots of brands and I feel like this is the best choice for me at the time.

Long ago I voted flatwounds on this thread, as both my basses were strung with EB flats. Since March 2014 the G&L L2000 has been strung with Dunlop nickel plated roundwounds. They produce sustaining deep fundamentals. The gauges are 0.045, 0.065, 0.085 and 0.105. E, D# and D-tunings are all working well. Even C# is possible with a small trade off concerning intonation. These strings offer about everything I desire. The price is right as well!
I primarily use La Bella, TI, Sadowski, and Fender flats, but I also like Circle K rounds and La Bella tapes too.

I'm currently on the path to being a "strictly tapewounds" guy, as my string list is currently as follows:
-La Bella white nylons on my SX 32" Jazz Bass, Sterling SUB Ray4 and soon to be on my Fender Telecaster.
-D'Addario nylons on my Ibanez AEB5E ABG. I will most likely switch to La Bella white nylons when the time comes to change them (this might be a long time since they are holding up really well).
The only instrument of mine that won't be wearing nylons is my Samick acoustic guitar, which will be keeping its Thomastik-Infield Classic S flats.
