I live in a pretty small non-metro market area, but there is a very well-known vintage instrument store in town. Over the years I’ve seen some pretty interesting stuff. Lots of old Fender tweed amps, and I was allowed to play a 1956 Telecaster there, but I’ve never seen or played a fifties P-bass.

A couple of basses that have only appeared a few times. Lakland 55-94 Lined Fretless. Until recently a Lakland 55-94 with a 34” Scale.
I had a black one with white binding and unlined ebony board. I sold it to fund my first Shuttle. No regrets actually. It was a nice bass but a little neck divey. I prefer my 4003FL.....also kind of rare.
Fender/Heartfield DR basses, at least never at reasonable prices in the last decade that I’ve seen. It’s a shame because it’s a unique electronics set up and they’re fine basses, but they just never show up anymore and when they do the asking prices are about double what I think they’re worth in terms of objective quality.
Pre-Ernie Ball Sabre in great condition seems to be elusive from where I stand. This was the last one I have seen for sale (at a 2022 guitar show).
Really wanted it but the price was too steep for me.
I think there were less than 400 made of each finish. Rare as hen's teeth. 'er indoors bought me one for my fiftieth birthday in 2015.

The basses I'm interested that rarely come up for sale are vintage, and non-main stream.
I just missed one locally three weeks ago for $1600. I was holding out for a white one, it was a burst. Someone bought it and flipped it on Reverb the next day for $2400

Really? There are around a hundred available on Reverb right now and usually a few in the TB classifieds at any given time. Granted people who want an Alembic usually want a very specific model or configuration (heck, If I'm girding myself for a five-digit purchase I'm gonna be fussy too), but Alembics are not particularly rare as boutique customs go.
