8-year-old-iPhone. and when it's time to "upgrade", I'm buying another dirtcheap used iPhone. I ain wastin' my hard-earned gig money on a $1500 device that I carry around in my pocket. screw that

I was just at a large gathering of musicians for about a week. Of course I noticed that nearly everybody had an Apple phone. I also noticed the large number of people who carry their phones around with an external battery pack. I've never seen an Android phone that way. What does it mean? It's probably just that people are clinging to their old phones, and don't know about or don't want to pay for a battery replacement. The two people in my immediate family with iPhones both got battery replacements at the Apple store, and it was a heck of a lot cheaper than a new phone.

iPhone 13 Pro. I keep getting tempted to upgrade to the latest, because I keep getting offers to get one "free" but I'm pretty happy with it.

OnePlus Nord....something. Relatively cheap (at the high end of the "budget" phones), long battery life (I regularly get 4-5 days out of each charge), does everything I need a phone to do, and has a decent camera to boot. It's android which I prefer, but that does mean it has AI nonsense on it (that I have yet to disable. Soon.)

Actually, I despise using any cell phone for texts (instead of email), internet (instead of my laptop), email, etc. It's only good for phone calls and maps/directions, imho. As you might suspect, I grew up with a rotary dial phone on the kitchen wall.

iPhone SE gen3. No reason to own anything more expensive. I hate that the headphone jack was left off, why do I have go buy Bluetooth earbuds or a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter?

I’m a long time Mac user so iPhone makes sense because of the iCloud integration. Texts appear on both devices and with the current OSes I can actually answer the phone while on the computer even though the phone is another room.

Good question! Personally I’m comfortable with an iPhone, they are all so good now that I’d never buy new - a refurbished phone outright (say about £200, which buys an unbelievably capable computer in your pocket) and a pay-monthly contract with only the deal I need. As a younger man I did the whole ‘get phone with contract’ and it sucks if you are not wealthy - I needed my outgoings to be minimal and a flashy phone was a pain in my budget which I regretted, and it caused stress.

I don’t have a landline - in England it is now cheaper to have a mobile phone contract (there is still a monthly standing charge for the ‘privilege’ of having a land line, even if you don’t use it at all).
I’m out and about a lot so the ability to navigate, listen to tunes, communicate, look stuff up, etc etc when I want/need is incredible. What a time to be alive!

First time I went to my bank branch near closing time only to find it had moved was the moment I saw the value of pocket internet. Also books and newspapers when I been stuck in hospital.

Even though I always have some sort of Apple computer since 1986, I never liked the iPhone. I just get an older generation Pixel . My daughter works for them and I am the only one in the family and extended family that doesn't have one, We have in the drawer some 2- 1 year old iPhones that I could just turn on but I am not going to. I have developed some apps (not available in the store) for some wireless testing and also use it as an interface to car ECU scanner, so that is another reason why. I also have a flip non smart phone because we have an extra line and I have pay the same price anyway.

I should have explained myself better I guess... as evidently I tweaked my buddy @Jeff Scott into a too.

What I was getting at is that my experience has been that the selling of latest/greatest phones along with data plans amounts to a racket. At some point I just decided next time I buy a phone, I'll buy a phone, and not a 'plan'.

I used to keep up with the newest Android phones by HTC. That ended in 2013. I now use the oldest good phone I can. I am clinging to my Samsung S10E. Does all I need it to.

I bought the HTC with the fold out keyboard but one day in the snow I slipped and fell on my left hip the exact same spot I carried my phone in my jeans pocket and totalled it. I really rated that phone it had the clearest voice calls I ever heard. After that I just bought cheaper Androids until I got fed up of the pocket dialling IIRC I had a fairly decent Samsung for the time but that too pocket dialled before I moved on to the Apple.
Never used a contract, I buy what I can afford and use the cheapest tariffs. Current tariff is £11 a month for unlimited national calls and texts and 20MB data. I don't need more than that.

I can think of 2 times I've pocket called in maybe 15 years I carried a smart phone. Coukd have something to do with manually locking the screen before I pocket it. Cept when I forget of course.

Motorola Power 5G 2023, I usually keep a phone 2.5 to 3.5 years as that is the usual battery life span - this is my 3rd Motorola and they have all been solid.
I have used higher quality and expensive phones in the past for work but I find this level has the access and utility I actually use and it has a decent camera.
