Chick belongs on Expert Village......that's awful.

I'm thinkin' she painted the backwards 16th note on the bass all by herownself, too. Girl got some talent.
Even The Harlem Globetrotters are prolly turning over in their graves.

Paul, with all due respect because I know you are good player with lots of experience, do you know who she is? Are you just trying to get a rise out of the bluegrass players?
Missy Raines has won seven International Bluegrass Music Association Bass Player of the Year awards. She is one of the most well regarded bass players in Nashville with a ton of commercial success. Now, I could understand if someone took exception to her being discussed in the jazz section, but this is the bluegrass section and her bluegrass resume speaks for itself. That video was from a bluegrass website. Of course it came first from jazz, but Sweet Georgia Brown is a fairly common instrumental in bluegrass circles and people do all sorts of variations.
I don't get all the negativity. So unnecessary.

Edgar Meyer plays "Bluegrass', "Newgrass" or whatever it's evolved into these days. He plays in tune too, really in tune! Can slap and all that as well. That's not even mentioning all the wonderful classical stuff. In tune is in tune, no matter what kind of music is played. Was it the Duke that said there are only two kinds of music? "Good music, and the other kind" There is only two kinds of playing, good playing...and the other kind. The manner in which the intro of that video is played is the "other kind". IMHO.

LowEnd, since when is good intonation and the ability to trully play the instrument with a sembalance of tecent technique limited to any genre?
IMO, Barry Bales is the guy in that genre, IMO. He can really play the bass.
IMO, Missy doesn't have a clue about musicality. Yes, i'm very aware of most great bassists in any genre, including Bluegrass players. Her left hand is painful to watch, but so is Charlie Haden's, but he seems to be able to play some music. She sounds just very uncomfortable with her playing. IMO.
IMO, Edgar is from another world no matter what he does and if you put Missy in this catagory you need to look around a bit.

I don't dispute what you observe in that particular video clip. All I know is she has gotten a ton of work in bluegrass over the years with top players.

I hear Paul Chambers often played so out of tune on some of Miles' tracks that they had a hard time completing the recordings. And he is one of the legends of jazz bass.

You are right, Edgar is in another level, for sure. He just was the first to come to mind as I posted. I'm no Bluegrass expert, by any means..and certainly could stand to check a lot more of the players out. I try to play "good", all the time in public for sure but sometimes I play "the other way" too. I'm just really shocked to see Ms. Raines letting something as awkward and out of tune get out there. And in the form of an "how to" video. The standard can't be that low, can it?

In other threads I have mentioned how I see so many 'masters' that play with questionable technique, and this is one of them. To name a few others - Ben Allison, Slam Stewart, and to name my own personal favorite player - Danny Thompson. This doesn't mean that I can't learn something from them, but if I was seen by certain players on this site, using the same right or left hand techniques I see some of these players use, I would probably be ridiculed to no end. And I must be learning something to make a technique judgement on an instrument I haven't been playing that long, as being wrong.

Back to the original question. what is the song at the end of the clip? Reminds me of something I played in my BG days.

Okay gentleman…being a chick bluegrass player (love you too PeeDub)…some people just don’t understand genius…and that comment goes both ways. :D

Missy is a talented and respected bluegrass bass player with many accolades in her genre of music. She made her mark in bluegrass on an old beat up Kay bass (no $100,000 carved bass for her) playing thousands of festivals in her career. She has pushed herself and her band “the new hip” (because she literally has a new hip after years with a painful, debilitating limp) to the outer limits of bluegrass and into jazzgrass. She may even bring some bluegrass fans over to jazz.

Her new music has its fair share of fans and critics…but she keeps on making music because she can. She has a gift and the confidence to keep going when others have given up. And she is a female leader of her own band, not an easy task in any type of music. The academy work she is doing not only helps support her family but it also makes her accessible to the folks who want to learn bass. Can’t kick her for wanting to work and share her knowledge even if it is not your cup of tea.

My friend Wil once said…for every chair there is a a$$ and for every a$$ there is a chair. Find your seat and enjoy the ride. :cool::):D

Keep digging yourself deeper, Paul. You just got through saying Barry Bales was "the guy," and now you say, "if this is the standard in bluegrass bass..." Get a hobby other than trolling the forum looking for people to insult. Maybe take some time out to play the bass or something.

When she was addressed as a chick and not a bassist.

I was going to drop some links of some of the great lady bassists in classical, jazz and other genres inluding a lady bassist in the NY Phil who could put most of us guys to shame.

She is a bluegrass bassist who is pushing the genre with a new fusion style of bluegrass and jazz. A bold move that not everyone in bluegrass is thrilled with…I applaud her for making the music that is in her soul. Regardless of the lines between style of music.

IMO, it's not about her sex, it's about quality in the playing. I'm not here to put her down but if this's the highest standard of Bluegrass bass playing, some work needs to be done, IMO.

That would be a good thing as she is the seven-time IBMA Bass Player of the Year. So YES she is some of the best current bluegrass bassist along with a list of peers.

Since we are in the “Bluegrass” section I feel safe in saying while bluegrass looks simple enough to play, there is a drive to the music that many players don’t feel from their toes to the tips of their fingers. A really great bluegrass bassist knows how to get that solid timing and explode in simple 1-4-5 chords with out a blast of notes.

To go back to the original question…I have poked around for the song she is playing at the end of video with out luck. It maybe improvising…in bluegrass that is called “taking a break”. :p

EDIT: I think I said, IMO. May not be yours but whatever.
