What the heck does a Sansamp do? Why do I need one?

I guess I'll be the decenting voice here. You don't need one. I have bought and sold 2 or 3 of these. I don't have one. For myself, I don't need tone shaping from my DI. I use a Radial JDI. Simple, tough and great sounding.

As far as getting "your sound" from any rig...I guess having a preamp that you take with you everywhere you play is an option. I always have PA support and my Radial JDI (I suppose it's my BDDI) with me and find that I pretty much sound like me no matter what or where I'm playing.

I have stated this before, but I really like my sans amp and will likely always keep it. But i dont actually have it in my board and keep it seperate as a "pocket rig" in the event that i cant take any other gear.

I love to goof around with it. in the end, my Stingray needs no help to achive my sound!

I know many people don´t do it, but I also use my SABDDI for recording.

SO many people do this. the sansamp is ubiquitous in studio-land! i record with mine all the time. i usually run a split signal: one into the sansamp, the other into some other preamp (or maybe into a crazy effect of some sort). mix the two, and you've got an amazing sound.
