What was your first bass guitar?

Two words: SX.

Lol it's a p-bass style, with the fricken nastiest sparkeley blue finish on the body and inch-think orange crap on the neck. I HATED it's looks, and I hated the feel of the finish on the neck. I bought it myself in 7th grade. It's still sitting in my basement, it's missing a neck plate and therefore hasn't been played in a long time.

My second bass is a black Fender P. I got a fantastic deal on this used bass, or I would have gotten a sunburst or natural because black is my least favorite bass color ever. In an attempt to make up for the boring-ness of it's looks, I put electrical tape on part of the pickguard in a checkerboard pattern and switched out the knobs for some chickenheads. SWEET =P. I got it at 15, again without any parents help, and that's what I'm playing now at 17. I still don't have a job, so that's what I'll be playing for a while.

It's a good bass, but I still dream of Rickenbackers at night......

My first was a Washburn force of about '87 vintage. Played "Smoke on the Water" relentlessly till the neighborhood was pissed. dropped it, broke the neck, tried repair, but the neck looks like a ski-jump. It has EMG active pick-ups, but their not even soldered, just the good old wires twisted together method. Still, I love it to death and will never part with it even if its just wall art now

What was your first Bass Guitar ? In 1974, my first bass guitar was a Kay.... The strings were about an inch above the fret board. My parents said I would have to buy the next one. Once I learned to play, it wasn't long before I was out doing anything I could to make a few bucks..... Picking up returnable Coke bottles, mowing grass for 3.00 per lawn and checking pay phones for change......... I was not playing this Kay Bass much longer.

First bass was a 68-69 Kent, hollow body, Beatle bass sorta look-a-like thing. Here's a pic I found, not mine:

Played it for about a year. Then I bought this:

memphis p + j with no PG, it was metallic blue. Bought it from a "friend", had if for some 2 weeks before he borrowed it and I never saw the bass again. Ever. Some 5 months later, the guys shows up with a "gremlin" (p copy, no pg either) and says that I can keep that one while he finds me my blue bass.

Did I ever see the guy again?? nope. I pawned the gremlin for like 80 bucks, and got me my first used fender for 489 bucks, which i consider my real first bass.

In 1985 I purchased a brand new Peavey Fury for around $275, money earned doing newspapers and mowing lawns, etc.

I miss nothing about it; the feel and tone were awful, but it was better than trying to work out bass lines on my friend’s brother’s toy 6 string.

My next bass was a 4003 Rickenbacker, and things changed after that. And then a fretless Pedulla, and then a...

84 MIJ Fender Precision. It was brown sunburst with a white pickguard and pickup, and a maple fretboard. I bought it used in 1989 with some dings and scratches, but it played like a masterpiece and was tough as a tank. I had to sell it several years ago to pay bills, and I dearly miss it. :(
