Fender Mustang with the competition stripe - think it was a '69 - I got it in 1971

Back in '70 I had the same hollowbody Kent as jbassbob from p.1. Set my parents back $35 so I owed them alot of carwashes and oil changes.
Put black tapewounds on it and as I recall, it played pretty good.
Wish I still had it and I'm looking for another one at the right price.

My first bass was a crappy cheap 6 string guitar that I strung with 4 fat flatwound strings and left 2 strings off. Then I got a Japenese Hofner copy, Then I got a real Hofner, then I got a Gibson EBO, then I got a 1968 4001 Rickenbacker. I played it for about 35 years and sold it when I converted to the dark side and now only play 5 string basses.

80s American Standard Jazz, in 1991 (after having played 6-string geetar for about 3 years).

Unfortunately, I had to get rid of it about 2 years later and hadn't owned bass again until recently.

Ya may not be able to polish a turd, but you sure can repaint one.

FWIW, my first bass was a Gibson Grabber in about 1976. Seemed much nicer at the time than it does to me now, but considering all the possible off-brand options, it wasn't that bad.

First bass I owned was an Ibanez GSR 200. Failed attempt at swinging bass around body, split neck from fretboard. Defretted it and now it sits in the corner of my room. Now playing a Wick and loving it every minute

Mine was also a Kay , in 1965 -- single cutaway, double PUP from Spiegel's catalog. Traded it within a year for a Gagliano -- PUPs & bridge by Hofner -- P bass style, short scale. Got a used '59 Fender P by 1967.

I had that same Kay! Speigel's, my God! I recall it was $179 and I had to pay my Dad back from my paper route. Had a matching Kay amp with brown cloth and a two-tone brown and white shell. Ugly as hell, but thumped pretty good. I traded it for a Crown (?) which was shaped like a Jaguar bass today, then bought a Hagstrom II in '66
