What was your first bass guitar?

A Polytone bass.

It was big, long neck, hefty, and neck heavy bass that was nearly as tall as me back then. It was a black 2 pup bass with gold hardware and pearl inlays with neck and body bindings. It was so neck heavy it was literally a workout standing up and playing that when I finally scraped and saved and got my brand new '78 P-Bass, the P-Bass felt like a toy!

It was a Hondo P-style bass in awful clownburst. Bought it new for $119 in 1982 or 1983. All I remember was that the neck was bowed like crazy and that it had a string-thru body bridge. I got rid of it about 6 months later when it was clear that I was going to stick with it, and bought a new Fender P - black with a maple fretboard. Didn't keep it though

Ibanez ATK 3EXI. I loved it. Until I got my Spector. Then I loved that. And then I got my Warmoth Jazz. Now I love that. Its a cycle man.

Used early 60's p-bass, given to me. I gave it back a few years later because well, "it was all beat up and stuff". I was 14.

At least I kept the 59' magnatone 260 amp that was also given to me at the same time.

A Cameo, cute short scale bass sounded like shite though, the salesman also sold me an Ampeg B-25B ? amp with 2x15 Cab, that on the other hand was sweet

"Violin sunburst" Yamaha BBG4S II 4-string I picked up on Musician's Friend new for $279 (I think). I still have it. Two active soapbar pickups, gold hardware, sweet sounding bass. I think it's a discontinued model, which is another reason I'm holding onto it.

Nope. Nice bass though.

Mine was pretty much a duplicate of a single pickup "Ventures" Mosrite, only smaller. Body was plywood, don't remember what wood the neck was. I'm pretty certain it wasn't a Univox Hi-Flyer either. No name, but "Made in Japan" was stamped on the neckplate. It was white w/ a chrome pickup cover, cheesy little white knobs, and tortise shell pickgard.

A Teisco sunburst four string bought new for $35 at a department store called Two Guys From Harrison in Middletown NJ around 1973. Lousy bass but I wish I still had it if only for sentimental reasons. I smashed it on-stage a couple of years after I bought it.

Greco Hofner Beatle bass copy. Beautiful but I knew nothing of tone, pickups, etc.

Sold it and bought a 1973 Fender Jazz.

Martin Stinger 4 string from the 90's. It was a P/J configuration. I bought it in a hard case from my college neighbor for 75 bucks. I still have it too.

My first was a Univox hollow body bass from the 70's. 335 shape.
I loaned it to the band The Posies (whom a few of you may recall) who recorded some of their first album with it.
I sold it to a friend who still has it.

My first was a Fender P bass. I hated it so much; it was like playing a Louisville Slugger. My second was a Guild Pilot with the P/J EMGs, and I LOVED that one

I like baseball bats turned into guitar necks, so I probably would have liked your P.

The bass I stared on was a Vantage something or another. It was more or less a P copy with massive neck dive and a serious weight problem. I don't miss it a bit.

Mine was an epiphone accu bass p bass copy. The older one with the hockey stick headstock. I bought it used for $99 in 2001 from music go round in Cary, NC. About a month or so later the pickup broke, it literally fell apart. So it kinda sat in my bedroom at my parent's house for a long time. The first band I played bass in, I used the guitar player's yamaha starter bass until I saved up enough for my stingray.

When I was in college I put the epiphone back together and put a Seymour Duncan 1/4 pound p pickup in it. But then I took that out again to put it in my modified MIM jazz bass, so it currently doesn't have a pickup again. I kinda want to restore it again!

Fender p/j knock off by a company called casino. Front pick up was broken and neck was warped, not that I knew that at the time, but I loved that bass. Went back to the store where I bought it about a month ago to discover that 5 other basses had this exact problem.
