What Washburn Bass Do You Own (Database)?

All right folks, here is the [Great Electric] Beast, as so named by my brother. It started out as a stock MB-5, but has evolved a bit:
  • Hipshot took one of their stock B bridges, drilled it for string through, and chrome plated the base of it for me back in 1998.
  • I drilled the body for string through and put chrome barrel Carvin inserts in.
  • EMG sent me a set of MJ pickups back in 1998 that I installed and run on an 18V setup. The controls are now separate volume and tone for each pickup. The interesting story on this one is that MJs weren't actually for sale when I got them. Mine is a prototype set off the engineer's bench.
  • The B-string tuning machine is a Hipshot detuner for drop-A tuning... because Goth metal. I probably should apologize for that.
  • Both strap pins were replaced somewhere along the way for strap lock pins. I don't remember if they were Schaller or Dunlop.
  • I replaced the rear control cover and battery cover, but I can't remember why.
  • The truss rod cover is also new (from Carvin) to replace the MB-5 with THE BEAST.
  • The button on the strap has been in place since the early '90s as well.

The SHB-65 was the five strings model of the SHB-60 and was not officially released because Stu leave Washburn for Warwick just before the announcement of the year 2013 new models and they cancelled the Stu Hamm line of bass on a rush even if three new models including the SHB-65, the SHB-35 (SHB-30 five strings) and the SHB-85 (an import version of the SHBH1 with the same EMG as on the USA Made one but with downgrade bridge, tuners and neck) was already build in the foreign factories. That's why we found those basses on the market, for the price you paid you get an hell of a good deal.

I am pretty sure that it's not the same EMG as the one on the SHB3H that Stu used on the video that was posted with the bass listing on reverb. Only the USA made model was equipped with the EMG-X found on the SHB3H and the SHB1H. The only foreign produced Stu Hamm Series bass that have EMG-X was the SHB-85. I think the other models (SHB-60 and SHB-65) got EMG build under licence by Korean manufacturer. Futhermore, with the SHB-65 you should get also piezzo pups under the bridge saddles.

OK, so my washburn arrived today. Meh... Decidedly average, at best. As the review of its four string cousin stated, noisy jazz pickup. Best I can tell, three volumes and one tone. Done. Piezo can only run by itself. I'll likely flip it. The good news is I'm not into it that deep.

Interesting. Don't know much about the Stu Hamm basses and never heard any stellar comments of them. To me, recent Washie basses are exactly that---average at best as you said. Just OK. The stellar stuff actually are the older basses, those..can really be stellar.

Did it again. Came across a red 84 Force-40EQ with Kahler bridge that I couldn't let go at *that* price... Double soap bar, so I assume it's an 84 or maybe an 85 model. Pics will follow but it's gonna take a few days.

BTW there's a nice 82 B-40 for sale not too far from my place, but won't sell at € 500, that's for sure. S/N is 821632 for the record. Lookee here

Heya Heisenbass--------good to hear from you. That is a nice looking B-40! Danke for the alert about it.

As to your new Force 40-----it is indeed a 1984. It was the only Force 40 to have the soapbars production standard and also was the last year of production for the F-40.

1985 saw the Sarzo stuff (B-50 and B-70), the B-60 and B-62, the B-4 and B-8, the B-40EQ (active) and my favorite from 1985--the headless B-42 (aka Force 42) for $899.00!

Plus, very strange, there is evidence the B-20 Stage bass was made in 1985 but I would think in very limited number (and maybe just proto-type numbers??). The only evidence I have on that is a B-20 stage bass with SN 570122 in cavity in pencil !
The "possibility" exists, I suppose, it is a proto-type re-issue from 1995 that never made it, similar to the re-issue B-20Q Stage bass (for quilted top) prototype serial number 04060710 that never went into production also.

Looking forward to your pictures and glad to hear you got a good deal on it. Have to love the Force 40. :thumbsup:
