What would be your first pedal?

just as you would imagine, circuits have an "in" and an "out". a lot of the difference in bass pedals vs. guitar pedals, has to do with the "size" of the capacitor, usually one at each the in and out of the circuit. you can think of it as; "a bigger cap allows a wider range (more lows) through than for guitar (where a narrow range is desired)". i'll leave it at that. go have fun. -Dash

Awesome. You da man (except you're not a man).

I'm a church bassist and an effects newbie.

My church uses the SansAmp BDDI for going direct to the FOH with no amp (literally sans amp).

If I were to start my own pedal board, I would start with VT Bass DI and MXR Bass Compressor to add to my tried and true TU-3; everything else is non-essential for my needs.

If you use the sans amp at church then why suggest the VT Bass? Anything I should know about between the two?

Cool. So, after hearing what all of you wonderful people have to say, I think I'll tackle it in this order (feel free to debate. Debates are fun.): pre-amp w/ overdrive feature, compressor, OD, distortion, fuzz, then all the "fun" stuff like octave and envelopes and stuff.

If you go preamp first, which is a solid choice, check out the Rusty Box. Wonderful preamp with great tone and gain and has a Balanced out.

shoot... i was just talking about this right HERE haha! :atoz:

There is actually a debate about using a quality digital reverb with bass? Seriously? lol!

I wonder what the chances are that the NaySayer (s) in question have never actually used what I am recommending? Nah! That NEVER happens! ;)

P.S. We can just keep this our little secret, eh Dash? :D

P.S.S By the way... That debate thread is HILARIOUS!

I see that now. although everyone input is giving me great ideas and all sorts of pedals to try. I guess part of what I was asking was "where do I start?"

I'm channeling what I wish my future self would have said to me when I asked this very question not long ago (not out loud). If I could go back to my own self two years ago, I'd say, self, 'This is a rabbit hole. I'd say don't solve a problem until you know what it is you are solving.' And I'd point to old self's wallet.

I ended up doing the following after much trial and error and so I'd say to old self:
- Start with the best compressor you can afford
- Get the VT Bass DI so you can switch to a distinct voice when it the song makes sense (and run to the board) -- I actually use the VT Bass, not the DI version - I run DI from my preamp
- Get a boost pedal (or EQ pedal) for switching between acoustic and electric bass (or soloing I suppose)
- Get a high pass filter (I use [sfx] Micro thumpinator)
- Get a tuner pedal

...but only after you have the best amp and cab you can afford.

2c from a Church Bassist learning as he goes.
