What would be your ideal jazz bass?

how bout this... it is lighter than the half dozen or so early 60's jazzes I've played, it has a clearer tone than new am standards and a neck that is better than any sadowsky or cs jazz I've had the pleasure of playing.... lollipop tunes, nitro, vintage pups ... dots and binding and better tone than 4 other top of the line fenders I own
oh yeah and our own JohnK made it himself.... a 66 car jazz

Here's one of my frankensteined basses ...

White Fender Body, Tort pickguard, Seymour Duncan pickups, Audere 4 band preamp, Mighty Mite 4 string p-bass neck, Schaller Bridge, and other parts.

I'll play:

Neck:
-Ebony fretboard
-22 frets
-Mother of pearl inlays (ebony)
-Maple with walnut stripe
-Flatter neck, not as C-shaped
-1.5" nut width
-White binding

Body:
-Solid swamp ash
-Spalted maple top (matching headstock)
-No pickguard
-Rear control cavity
-Arm and heel contour

Hardware/Electronics:
-Black badass II bridge
-Active EMG pups
-Black knobs with mother of pearl dots
-Individual volume master tone controls with stacked treble/bass
-Toggle switch
-Black truss rod cover with mother of pearl initials
-Black t-shaped tuners



Oh I can picture it in my head......

For me, I'll continue to use my three Jazz basses:
Fender '75RI natty jazz with Badass bridge, maple & pearl BnB neck,
Fender 3TB jazz with custom shop pups, Gotoh bridge, and rosewood & pearl BnB neck,
Lakland JO4 in 3TB with Hansen pups, maple & pearl BnB neck

Ok, so maybe I got a thang for blocked and bound necks... Try looking at dots in dingy bars and you'll know what I mean.

I will however, go back to the OP's request and say that I would have Carey Nordstrand build one of his Jazz basses with Big Singles and of course - a BnB neck. BUT... I would have it finished in Marty Bell's gold holoflake sparkle.

Hmmm.
Basics: 4 string, neck thru
Body: Walnut body with a bubinga top. no finish except maybe a dark oil rub (keep the grain visible). 70s bridge pickup position with a Seymour Duncan Antiquity 2 in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan STK-J2 in the neck, piezo pickup in the bridge, v/v/t/t control with toggle switch, blend control for the piezo, Badass bridge or a trem, no pickgaurd, rear rout, gold hardware, unbound, contoured heel and forearm contour, fully shielded electronics, strap locks, and the ability to send each pickup to its own output or send them all into one (think Rickenbacker only with a piezo, so 4 outputs).

Neck: Unlined fretless, ebony fretboard (26 fret equivalent). Wenge neck with a very thick profile (think Steve Harris signature P Bass), no inlay, bound, gold hardware with a drop d tuner on the e string, steel stiffening rods, bullet truss rod adjuster, Graphtec (non XL) nut.

Hey, I can dream.

As long as it has a quartersawn maple neck with a super tight neck joint, vintage style tuners (long and tall, tighten clockwise), and shakes my body when I hit the strings solidly colour and pickup spacing doesn't matter.

If it did, it would take me years to settle on a combination. Why not have 5?

This is tough...

I have built a ton of J basses and pretty much own what I currently use which is one of 2 versions however there are common elements with both.

-Nordstrand NJ4s single coils
-Schaller bridge and open back vintage style tuners
-Audere preamp

Graphite neck / with Alder or Swamp ash bodies
NJ4s 60s in 60 position

Maple neck with Abalone inlays / Hard northern Ash or soft maple
60's or 70's wind and or position.

i like these threads! heres my dream jazz.

-dinky jazz body in ash finished in a natural vintage tint, contoured heel.
-32inch scale maple jazz and fingerboard with black binding and dots. small frets, slim profile, graphite nut. lightweight trussrod. finished in a satin vintage tint.
- nordy nj4 single coils
-john east retro preamp.
-hipshott ultralight clover tuners in chrome.
-hipshott A bridge in chrome
- black or tort scratchplate (cant decide)

i might do a warmoth one of these days!

I would be just like my current '08 MIA jazz, but with different cosmetics. It is currently Charcoal Frost metallic/black/maple (dots), but I would like it to be Purple metallic with gold hardware, blocked and bound maple neck, and either a black or a MOP PG.

I'm very happy with my two four string Jazz basses, an American Series from 2003 with noiseless Fralins and a 2010 G&L JB with DiMarzio Area J pickups. My ideal J-bass would be traditional like these, but would have blocks, binding, and 21 frets. It would also weigh no more than eight pounds. I love red. Therefore, I'd want a Mike Lull V4 or MV4, much like this stunner at Rocket Music, but with a drop-tuner on the E string:
