The biggest surprise in this thread is finding out how many people on this forum are OK with keeping the amp.

If someone wants to keep something that's not theirs, just do it, don't insult everyone else by trying to justify it or pretend it's OK. :rollno:

By my observation, the insults are being dealt by those on the moral high ground .

Well now that you ask, there was the decent paying union job that I had with a telecommunications company. They decided to outsource my entire dept. So they spent a year whittling down the dept by throwing the book at every minor infraction. Late for work by 5 minutes 3 times in 6 months? Outta here. After they got rid of over 85% of the dept, those left standing got severance pay.
Then there are all my dealings with AT&T. Let me just say, NEVER get suckered into their online store deals. They apparently don't think they need to deliver on them. And if you disagree, you pay $400 for early termination.
Or how paypal treated me like a criminal when I had been identity thefted. Wells Fargo stepped up and helped me fix things, while Paypal wouldnt stop fraudulent charges until days after I initially notified them.
And of course, there is always the price of gas.

Those are terrible experiences. Policies written by people implemented by people. It's not the institution except the bad folks can remain somewhat anonymous.

I didn't see any examples, but I didn't read every post in all 16 or 17 pages.

My point is that the company did not intend to give him a free amp and he knows it. We can argue semantics all day, but as one of my managers used to say, "If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck." I'd be glad to go before all of the OPs friends, family and coworks and debate with him on whether or not keeping the head is ethical. :D

I read the first 7 pages, then skipped to the end. :) Ignoring what the OP said he would do (contact MF and pay for the second head), I'll keep to the original proposition.

What I would do firstly is point point exactly what appeared to have happened to my kids. We might have a laugh at how busy they must be, or how clumsy someone must have been to ship the item twice, but I would absolutely call MF and let them know what had happened. I'd let them know I thought of it as an honest mistake and hoped someone wouldn't get fired for it, and I'd go from there. If I ended up driving 10 miles to drop it off somewhere, I very likely would as well.

For me, that would have been the right thing to do. That my kids would get to see that this is how I expect them to behave as well would be pretty close to priceless, so that definitely contributes to my willingness to drag it across town to FedEx or something. "Kids, this is what you do : the right thing, quickly and with a smile". You can't buy these opportunities if you're a parent.

For the record I don't believe in karma or supernatural omnipotent invisible whatevers of any flavor, but I do believe that for me the right thing would have been to inform the company of the error, let them know it was not an issue for me, and work with them to rectify the situation to their satisfaction. It would not have caused me the slightest grief or regret, and again, the opportunity to do the right thing in such a unique circumstance in front of your children would be a great opportunity to be a great example of how you want them to act themselves. Totally win/win situation.

I think it is more than fair to sit on it but selling it is unethical.

It's yours to have. The one you were charged for is the one to sell.

If it were me, I'd sit on it for a backup amp in case 'mine' tanked. You'd probably have it for years unopened in its box, but that's the price to pay for being honest.

Nothing wrong with gifting it but keep it for awhile before letting go of it.

I dont understand all the rationale about "putting yourself in their shoes" etc.
MF is a corporation. Not a person.
Corporations are not people and do not deserve sympathy nor do they have any for you.

Actually, Corporations are 'Persons' - Not flesh and blood human beings.

You are not a person. You have a person. A person is purely a legal entity to act between your the business world and the physical realm.

The more you know!

I sure would send it back. If I get too much change, I tell the cashier or waiter or whatever.

But I never made such an experience while running my own businesses. In the case that someone had got something for free from one of my family companys, this people have kept it. Never got sent back something. Maybe we have been too careful.... :D

Was the asterisk an "i"?

Okay, I will rephrase:

"Karma has a way of lurking menacingly behind you in the shadows waiting for the most inopportune moment to just leap out and slap you upside the head."

The consequences can be a b*tch.

No, I was just teasing you, as Ive been ribbing all the people claiming "Karma" as a guide for ethical boundries.
The misuse of the word, as a person who is working diligently to better my spirit, is a slight peeve of mine.
Karma, to me, goes beyond the whole "what goes around, comes around" aspect, as the true rewards & punishments of Karma are something that come around in future existences, not this one.
For people who dont believe in the immortality of the soul, Karma is a convenient word, all too often misused for the 'natural balance of the Universe'.

Karma nazi!

instead of jumping to the conclusion that YOU know how the universe operates, and who is just and deserving and who is not. Perhaps, this is "karma's" way of slapping MF upside the head? Maybe the universe really want's the OP to play in stereo. Maybe the OP has had a month of bad days and this is the pay off.
I also wonder how many people who are so quick to admonish are the same exact folks that get all moral relativistic when it comes to paying their taxes, or even just helping out the less fortunate in their community.
How many times have you fed a homeless person this year?
I personally lost track of the number of times I have.
How many times have any of you done anything that wasn't in your self interest?

Mighty righteous of you, bro! Please dont mistake my perspective of how the universe operates as anything but, though. And never did I say who or whom not was deserving.
The only thing I did state above is the true definition of a word, and not what its come to mean colloquially. There is no conclusion to jump to. Dont read more into my words than what they say.

I pay my taxes properly, even when the opportunity to cheat and get more from the system is there, and I do plenty to help the less fortunate, on an almost daily basis.
Ive put up homeless people in my house for various lengths of time, with no reward other than the pleasure of doing so.
I do things everyday that arent in my own self interest, along with the things that are.

If youve got a bone to pick, it certainly isnt with me.
